Geography and wildlife The islands are low lying, and mainly covered in tussac grass , with the birdlife common to most of the FalklandIslands. The islands lie between West Falkland and Lafonia on East Falkland , the two largest islands of the archipelago, and which shelter them from rougher weather from the east and west. History Admiral George Grey, surveying the FalklandIslands in 1836, says in his journal entry of 21 December The Swan Islands are low and covered in tussock excepting the centre of the largest one where there is some clear ground with a sort of clear water lake in it where one of the Midshipmen killed a wild swan we had been told that there were a number of wild pigs on this island, but I did not succeed in killing any, although I landed 50 men to beat the island. Onesource date May 2009 The only official language of the FalklandIslands is English language English , and this is spoken by almost everyone on a day to day basis. Spanish language Spanish is spoken by nearly 10 of the population, a significant minority. Most of the speakers are immigrants, foreign workers, and expats, predominantly from Chilean people Chile and Argentine people Argentina . Falkland English dialect main FalklandIslands English Due to the isolation of the islands, the small population retains its own accent dialect, despite a large English people English immigration in recent years. In rural areas i.e. anywhere outside Port Stanley , known as the camp from the Spanish campo meaning field , the Falkland accent tends to be stronger. The accent has resemblances to both Australia NZ English, West Country and that of Norfolk in England. Historic Several languages have been used historically in the FalklandIslands. French language French the French were the first to colonise the islands, and their settlement at Port Louis, FalklandIslands Port Louis would have used French. The islands French name, Iles Malouines, stems from Saint Malo , and there were many Breton sailors round these parts, so Breton language Breton may have also been used, although there is no evidence of this Spanish language Spanish was used in early Falklands history, and also during the brief Argentine occupation of 1982. Yaghan language Yaghan a missionary settlement on Keppel Island contained many Yaghan s from Tierra del Fuego . The FalklandIslands Fox is sometimes taken to represent a possible pre European landing on the Falklands. This language has left no trace on the Falklands, and would not have been written at this time. ref Bridges, E L 1948 The Uttermost Part of the Earth Republished 2008, Overlook Press ISBN 978 1585679560 ref References reflist South America topic Languages of FalklandIslands topics Category FalklandIslands culture language stub falklands stub ... more details
