No footnotes date June 2009 The Uniform Securities Agent StateLaw Examination , commonly referred to as the Series 63, is developed by North American Securities Administrators Association NASAA and is administered by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority FINRA . The examination is designed to qualify candidates as securities agents within a state nearly all states require individuals to pass the Series 63 as a condition of state registration. The Uniform Securities Agent StateLaw Examination consists of 65 multiple choice questions. Applicants are allowed 75 minutes to complete the examination. Applicants must attain scores of 72 in order to pass. Credit is only given for correct answers. Of the 65 questions on the exam, 60 will count toward the final score. The remaining 5 questions are being pre tested for possible inclusion in the operational question bank these questions may appear anywhere in the exam and are not identified. The examination covers the principles of state securities regulation reflected in the Uniform Securities Act with the amendments adopted by NASAA and rules prohibiting dishonest and unethical business practices . The Uniform Combined StateLaw Examination also called the Series 66 exam is developed by North American Securities Administrators Association NASAA and is designed to qualify candidates as both securities agents and investment adviser representatives . The Uniform Combined StateLaw Examination consists of 100 multiple choice questions and 10 pretest questions. Applicants are allowed 2 hours 150 minutes to complete the examination. The examination is conducted as a closed book test. Upon completion of the examination, the score for each section and the overall test score will be processed by Financial Industry Regulatory Authority headquarters and made available to the candidate s sponsor. You need a score of at least 75 on the Series 66 exam to pass and become eligible for registration as a Registered Investment Adviser Representative. Prior to January 1, 2010, candidates had to attain scores of 71 in order to pass. The vignettes were quite subtle, and more often than not, despite many guesses, the panellists were unable to come up with the law that was actually being broken. The vignettes alternated with depictions of actual court cases, presented in a series of still cartoons, in storyboard format, with narration. The narrator would end by asking a question about how the judge eventually ruled. The four panellists would each guess what the judge decided, and why, and each panellist would conclude by lighting up a large Yes or No in front of his or her seat. After all four panellists had guessed, the answer would be revealed. Paul Soles himself was the first show host for the initial 1971 summer episodes.
