In statics , the block stacking problem also the book stacking problem , or a number of other similar terms is the following puzzle blockquote Place math N math Stiffness rigid rectangular blocks in a stable stack on a table edge in such a way as to maximize the overhang. blockquote The single wide problem involves having only one block at any given level. In the ideal case of perfectly rectangular blocks, the solution to the single wide problem is that the maximum overhang is given by math sum i 1 N frac 1 2i math times the width of a block. This sum is one half of the harmonic series mathematics harmonic series . The maximal overhang Limit mathematics tends to infinity as math N math increases, meaning that it is possible to achieve any arbitrarily large overhang, with sufficient blocks. Multiwide stacks using Counterweight counterbalancing can give larger overhangs than a single width stack. Even for three blocks, stacking two counterbalanced blocks on top of another block can give overhang close to 1, while the overhang in the simple ideal case is at most 11 12. As harvtxt Paterson Peres Thorup Winkler 2007 showed, asymptotically, the maximum overhang that can be achieved by multiwide stacks is proportional to the cube root of the number of blocks, in contrast to the single wide case in which the overhang is proportional to the logarithm of the number of blocks. Paterson et al. provide a long list of references on this problem going back to mechanics texts from the middle of the 19th century. harvtxt Hall 2005 discusses this problem, shows that it is wikt robust robust to nonidealizations such as rounded block corners and finite precision of block placing, and introduces several variants including nonzero friction forces between adjacent blocks. Classical mechanics In non relativistic kinematics , relative velocity is the vector geometric vector vector geometric Addition and scalar multiplication difference between the Velocity velocities of two objects, as evaluated in terms of a single coordinate system . For example, if the velocities of particles A and B are math mathbf v A math and math mathbf v B math respectively in terms of a given coordinate system, then the relative velocity of A with respect to B also called the velocity of A relative to B, math mathbf v A B math , or math mathbf v A mathrm rel B math is math mathbf v A mathrm rel B mathbf v A mathbf v B math . The expression the velocity of A relative to B is shorthand for the velocity of A in the coordinate system where B is always at rest . Conversely, the velocity of B relative to A is math mathbf v B mathrm rel A mathbf v B mathbf v A math . To be clear, the velocity of B as seen from A which is to say, math mathbf v B mathbf v A math is another expression meaning the velocity of B relative to A or indeed the velocity of B in the coordinate system where A is considered at rest Example Joe and Sara are driving in the same direction. Joe s velocity is 90 km h and Sara s 100 km h. If we take Joe s velocity as math mathbf v B math and Sara s math mathbf v A math then math mathbf v A mathrm rel B 100 90 10 text km h. math This is the velocity observed by Joe. Joe sees Sara moving at 10 km h. References Alonso & Finn, Fundamental University Physics ISBN 10 0 201 56518 8 Greenwood, Donald T, Principles of Dynamics. Goodman and Warner, Dynamics. Unreferenced date December 2007 Image cremonadiagram.jpg thumbnail right Cremona diagram for a plane truss The Cremona diagram is a graphical method used in statics of truss es to determine the forces in members graphic statics . The method was created by the Italian mathematician Luigi Cremona . In the Cremona method, first the external forces and reactions are drawn to scale ratio scale forming a vertical line in the lower right side of the picture. This is the net force sum of all the force Vector geometric vector s and is equal to zero as there is mechanical equilibrium. Since the static equilibrium equilibrium holds for the external forces on the entire truss construction, it also holds for the internal forces acting on each joint. For a joint to be at rest the sum of the forces on a joint must also be equal to zero. Starting at joint Aorda , the internal forces can be found by drawing lines in the Cremona diagram representing the forces in the members 1 and 4, going clockwise V sub A sup going up load at A going down , force in member 1 going down left , member 4 going up right and closing with V sub A sup . As the force in member 1 is towards the joint, the member is under compression, the force in member 4 is away from the joint so the member 4 is under tension. The length of the lines for members 1 and 4 in the diagram, multiplied with the chosen scale coefficient factor is the Magnitude mathematics magnitude of the force in members 1 and 4. Now, in the same way the forces in members 2 and 6 can be found for joint C force in member 1 going up right , force in C going down, force in 2 going down left , force in 6 going up left and closing with the force in member 1. The same steps can be taken for joints D , H and E resulting in the complete Cremona diagram where the internal forces in all members are known. In a next phase the forces caused by wind must be considered. Wind will cause pressure on the upwind side of a roof and truss and suction on the downwin ... more details

Orphan date February 2009 In the field of engineering mechanics , a zero force member refers to a member a single truss segment in a truss which, given a specific structural load load , is at rest neither in tension mechanics tension , nor in compression physical compression . In a truss a zero force member is often found at pins any connections within the truss where no external load is applied and three or fewer truss members meet. Recognizing basic zero force members can be accomplished by analyzing the force s acting on an individual pin in a physical system . NOTE If the pin has an external force or Moment physics moment applied to it, then all of the members attached to that pin are not zero force members UNLESS the external force acts in a manner that fulfills one of the rules below If only two members meet in an unloaded Joint building joint , both are zero force members. If three members meet in an unloaded joint of which two are in a direct line with one another, then the third member is a zero force member. If two members meet in a loaded joint and the line of action of the load coincides with one of the members, the other member is a zero force member. Reasons for Zero force members in a truss system These members contribute to the stability of the structure, by providing buckling prevention for long slender members under compressive forces These members can carry loads in the event that variations are introduced in the normal external loading configuration See also Structural engineering Truss External links http www.vcity.ou.edu demoModules analysis truss truss.htm Truss Overview http em ntserver.unl.edu NEGAHBAN EM223 note12 note12.htm Another Truss Overview Source Engineering Mechanics Volume 1 Equilibrium by C. Refimprove date November 2009 File Heller L szl s rja.jpg 200px right Heller L szl 1907 1980 was a Hungarian people Hungarian professor accredited with inventing the Heller Forg cooling system for power stations . Biography Born in Nagyv rad , Heller took a degree in mechanical engineering in 1931 at the ETH Zurich Eidgen ssische Technische Hochschule in Z rich . In the 1940s the first high pressure industrial power station was built according to his plans. It was around this time that he invented the Heller Forg system. In 1951 he was awarded the Kossuth Prize . He organized the Department of Energetics at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics , where he worked as a professor. He was a large contributor to the domain of statics , and helped establish the concept of entropy for engineering practices. In 1962 he became a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . Heller s nephew graduated from University of Southern California USC , obtaining a degree in Mechanical engineering. The Heller Forg System, or Indirect Dry Cooling System The system is named after Heller and Forg L szl , the active collaborator in the industrial implementation of the system. The Heller Forg system solved an important problem at power stations by utilizing cooling water more efficiently. The main point of their invention was to condense the vacuum steam using an injection of cool water. The still warm water enters into the fine gilled heat exchanger , cools down and becomes usable again for when the cycle is repeated. The system is known and used all over the world.
