  1. Computational resource

Refimprove date September 2007 In computational complexity theory , a computational resource is a resource used by some computational model s in the solution of computational problem s. The simplest computational resources are computation time , the number of steps necessary to solve a problem, and memory space , the amount of storage needed while solving the problem, but many more complicated resources have been defined. A computational problem is generally defined in terms of its action on any valid input. Examples of problems might be given an integer n , determine whether n is prime , or given two numbers x and y , calculate the product x y . As the inputs get bigger, the amount of computational resources needed to solve a problem will increase. Thus, the resources needed to solve a problem are described in terms of asymptotic analysis , by identifying the resources as a function of the length or size of the input. Computational resources are useful because we can study which problems can be computed in a certain amount of each computational resource. In this way, we can determine whether algorithm s for solving the problem are optimal and we can make statements about an Algorithmic efficiency algorithm s efficiency . The set of all of the computational problems that can be solved using a certain amount of a certain computational resource is a complexity class , and relationships between different complexity classes are one of the most important topics in complexity theory. Describing generally accessible computing equipment The term Computational resource is commonly used to describe accessible computing equipment and software. See Utility computing . 1. Computational model

for mathematical models of computers Model of computation Unreferenced date October 2008 A computational model is a mathematical model in computational science that requires extensive computational resource s to study the behavior of a complex system by computer simulation . The system under study is often a complex nonlinear system for which simple, intuitive analytical solution s are not readily available. Rather than deriving a mathematical analytical solution to the problem, experimentation with the model is done by adjusting the parameters of the system in the computer, and studying the differences in the outcome of the experiments. Operation theories of the model can be derived deduced from these computational experiments. Examples of common computational models are weather forecasting models, earth simulator models, flight simulator models, molecular protein folding models, and neural network models. 1. Computational irreducibility

Computational irreducibility is one of the main ideas proposed by Stephen Wolfram in his book A New Kind of Science . The idea Wolfram terms the inability to shortcut a program e.g., a system , or otherwise describe its behavior in a simple way, computational irreducibility . The empiricism empirical fact is that the world of simple programs contains a great diversity of behavior , but, because of undecidability , it is impossible to predict what they will do before essentially running them. The idea demonstrates that there are occurrences where theory s predictions are effectively not possible. Wolfram states several phenomena are normally computationally irreducible. Computational irreducibility explains observed limitations of existing mainstream science. In cases of computational irreducibility, only observation and experiment can be used. Informatics academic field Informatics is the academic field concerned with the study of the foundations, theory, structure, communication, and use of information. Computational informatics, as a subfield of informatics, studies information using computational methodologies. Computational informatics can also be interpreted as the use of computational methods in the information sciences. Development From a historical viewpoint, medical informatics scientists also known as medical informaticians started to use artificial intelligence and Baysian statistical methods in diagnosis and medical decision making, as early as in the 1970s. An example is the MYCIN system developed at Stanford University . The field has since evolved to use a wide range of computational methods and to interact with all possible scientific and other disciplinary domains. In the recent years, the field integrates the following Computational techniques Artificial intelligence, algorithms for architectures ranging from single CPU to massively parallel machines , programming, object oriented system design, databases, information retrieval, computer graphics and visualization, data mining, information extraction. br Probability, statistics and decision science Theory of probability, statistical inference, cost risk benefit analysis, probabilistic analysis, stochastic modeling, decision theory, statistical data analysis, probabilistic networks, pattern classification, statistical learning and modeling, statistical data mining. br Applied mathematics Graph theory, differential equations, optimization theory, wavelets, group theory. br Electrical engineering methods signal and image processing. br Domain knowledge Art and cultural heritages, biology, chemistry, engineering, medicine, the Web. br User sciences Design, human computer interaction, evaluation. br Cyberinfrastructure for informatics search engines, digital repositories, storage. br Scientometrics, bibliometrics and economics science and pol ...   more details
