  1. Canboulay

Canboulay from the French cannes brul es , meaning burnt cane is a precursor to Trinidad and Tobago Carnival . The festival is also where calypso music has its roots. It was originally a harvest festival , at which drums, singing, dancing and chanting were an integral part. After Emancipation 1838 , it developed into an outlet and a festival for former indenturered laborers and freed slaves who were banned from participating in the masquerade carnival events derived from European Christian traditions of the colonial elite, and whose drums and religious observances were also outlawed in the late 19th century. Consequently, Canboulay has played an important role in the development of the music of Trinidad and Tobago , for it was the banning of percussion instruments in the 1880s that led to the surreptitious innovations that gave birth to steelpan music. It is re enacted in Port of Spain each Carnival Friday in Trinidad. See also Canboulay Riots References De Ledesma, Charles and Georgia Popplewell. Put Water in the Brandy? . 2000. 1. Liberta, Antigua

Liberta is the third largest town in Antigua . It is located in the south of the island, inland from Falmouth Harbour Antigua Falmouth Harbour and the port of Falmouth, Antigua and Barbuda Falmouth , to which it is connected by road. History Around the time of emancipation, a female estate owner most likely a former slave owner had financial troubles and was forced to sell off a part of her property in small lots. The ex slaves in the neighbourhood eagerly bought up all the little freeholds, as they desired to own land in perpetuity. They immediately settled on the lots they had purchased, framed their houses and cultivated their gardens. Besides working on nearby plantations, income was also earned working as mechanics at the dockyard. Later on, their descedents also worked in trade as tailors and shop keepers. Liberta meaning liberty sprang up from proud, noble and forward thinking freed people in 1835. By 1842, a painted signboard near its border proudly read The Village of Liberta . Education In Liberta village there is a school called Liberta Junior Secondary which serves grades 1 9. 1. Steel (band)

for information on steel bands Steelpan Unreferenced date February 2011 Steel is a one off power metal project from Sweden that featured Dan Swan and members of Opeth . Started in 1996, this collaboration emerged during the recording sessions for Opeth s Morningrise album. During a jam session, when the band were soundchecking the drums, they hit upon an idea to record a short piece for fun, entitled Guitars and Metal . This gave birth to Steel. Subsequently, they were asked to record more songs and when they did, the songs which were originally meant for a demo, actually appeared on a limited picture 7 EP, entitled Steel band Releases Heavy Metal Machine released by Near Dark Productions. To this date, it remains their sole record. Featuring only two songs, Steel band Releases Heavy Metal Machine sounds very much like a typical 80s power metal band, with high pitched vocals, shredding solos, pounding bass lines and even 80s style sound effects police sirens, etc. . However, the record is not meant to be taken as a serious power metal attempt, explaining Swan s extremely high pitched vocals. As limited release, Steel band Releases Heavy Metal Machine remains a collectors item and is hard to come by.
