Prints produced entirely by stenciling , without woodblocks, are also called kappazuri . Kappazuri may be identified by the presence of visible brushstrokes, unevenness of color, pooling of ink at the margins of the stencil cutouts, and gaps or overlaps between colored areas and black outlines. Although also produced in Edo Tokyo , Kappazuri are more closely associated with prints from Osaka and Kyoto . The most prolific designer of Kappazuri was Urakusai Nagahide , and the most abundant examples are his depictions of the annual costume parade in the Gion district of Kyoto . unreferenced date August 2007 Architecturalelement stub Rag painting or ragging is a form of faux painting using paint thinned out with glaze painting technique glaze and old rags to create a lively texture on walls and other surfaces. Image sch ewf 5.jpg thumb 250px right Example of the ragging design with a stencil Ragging can be done as a negative or positive technique. The former involves rolling glaze over the entire surface, and removing it with clean rags to reveal the underlying paint color in a pleasing textural pattern. The latter is accomplished by applying glaze directly to the wall with a rag, and creates a similar pattern. Ragging is a very adaptable finish that can be used in a variety of areas, creating the illusion of an old world texture, but on a flat surface that can be easily painted over. Ragging can be done in a variety of patterns, including rag rolling, in which the rags are twisted together and then rolled over a wet glazed surface creating the illusion of fabrics such a velvet or silk. Ragging is also often used as a pattern underneath stenciling. See also Strie Color wash Venetian plaster Category Artistic techniques Category Decorative arts ... more details

A stencil buffer is an extra Data buffer buffer , in addition to the color buffer pixel buffer and depth buffer z buffering found on modern graphics hardware . The buffer is per pixel, and works on integer values, usually with a depth of one byte per pixel. The Z buffering depth buffer and stencil buffer often share the same area in the Random access memory RAM of the graphics hardware. In the simplest case, the stencil buffer is used to limit the area of Rendering computer graphics rendering stenciling . More advanced usage of the stencil buffer makes use of the strong connection between the depth buffer and the stencil buffer in the graphics pipeline rendering pipeline . For example, stencil values can be automatically increased decreased for every pixel that fails or passes the depth test. The simple combination of depth test and stencil modifiers make a vast number of effects possible such as shadow s, outline drawing or highlighting of intersections between complex Geometric primitive primitives though they often require several rendering passes and, therefore, can put a heavy load on the graphics hardware. The most typical application is still to add shadows to 3D computer graphics 3D applications . It is also used for planar reflections. Other rendering techniques, such as portal rendering , use the stencil buffer in other ways for example, it can be used to find the area of the screen obscured by a portal and re render those pixels correctly. Lambert Hitchcock May 28, 1795, Cheshire, Connecticut 1852 was an American furniture manufacturer ref name Lander http www.americanheritage.com articles magazine ah 2006 5 2006 5 9.shtml David Lander Last Seating America s Best Known Chair Is on the Brink of Extinction American Heritage , Oct. 2006. ref , famous for designing and mass producing the Hitchcock chair. Hitchcock was the son of John Lee Hitchcock, an American Revolutionary War veteran who was lost at sea in 1811. He attended the Episcopal Academy of Cheshire, now known as Cheshire Academy , and was an apprentice to woodworker Silas Cheney. In 1818, he opened a furniture factory in Riverton, Connecticut , then called Hitchcocksville. The factory at first made chair parts. Soon Hitchcock, influenced by Connecticut clockmaker Eli Terry , began mass producing simple, affordable chairs. Instead of painting designs on the backs, he used the relatively new and easier technique of stenciling . By the late 1820s, the Hitchcock Chair Company was producing over 15,000 chairs a year. Although an innovative manufacturer, Hitchcock was an unsuccessful businessman. His company went through receivership in 1832, with his brothers in law joining the business under the name Hitchcock, Alford & Co. In 1843, he sold his interest in the company and started a new company in Unionville, Connecticut , which also failed. He died in 1852 with little money to his name. In 1946, John Tarrant Kenney came upon the abandoned Hitchcock Chair factory while fishing on the Farmington River . He wrote a biography, The Hitchcock Chair , and started a new Hitchcock Chair Company in the same location. That business lasted until 2006, when it was forced to close due to competition from low cost overseas furniture manufacturers. In the spring of 2010, Rick Swenson and his business partner, Gary Hath, purchased the Hitchcock name, plans, and artwork. Their goal is to continue the Hitchcock legacy, bringing Hitchcock furniture into the 21st centu ... more details
