The StikineRanges are a mountain range in northwestern British Columbia , Canada . They are the northernmost subdivision of the Cassiar Mountains and among the least explored and most undeveloped parts of the province. They take their name from the name given to this part of the country the Catlins . The ranges lie mostly in Otago , although their western extremes lie in Southland, New Zealand Southland Region. There are four distinct ranges the small Rata and Beresford Ranges in the northeast, the Maclennan Range in the southwest, and the Forest Range, which can be considered as an extension of the Maclennan Range. Each of these ranges is oriented along a northwest southeast axis. The ranges are separated by the valleys of the Catlins River Catlins and Tahakopa River s. Inland, close to the water divide watershed s of these rivers, the boundaries between the ranges become indistinct, part of the reason why they are often grouped together under the one name. The Maclennan Range is the largest of the ranges in terms of length, being some 25 km 15 mi in length, but most of the highest hills are found inland in the area where the ranges are not easily differentiated. Formed along New Zealand s Marlborough Fault System , they can be seen as the northernmost extension of the Southern Alps in the South Island. Named the Looker on mountains, by Captain James Cook , they take their name from the town of Kaikoura at the southern extreme of the more eastern range, the Seaward Kaikouras. This range rises straight from and dominates the coast to the north of the town, and reaches its highest point with the 2610 metre Mount Manakau. The long straight river valley of the Clarence River, New Zealand Clarence River separate the Seaward Kaikouras from the longer and loftier Inland Kaikouras. This latter range contains the highest peak in the ranges, the 2880 metre Mount Tapuaenuku Tapuae o Uenuku , the translation from the Maori language Maori of which is the poetic Footprint of the rainbow . Beyond the Inland Kaikouras is the valley of the Awatere River , which runs parallel to that of the Clarence.
