  1. Stone Valley Recreation Area

    Stone Valley Recreation Area is an outdoor recreational and educational facility operated by The Pennsylvania State University . It is located in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania Huntingdon County near the village of Mooresville, Pennsylvania Mooresville . The convert 700 acre km2 sing on property is located over the mountain from the village of Pine Grove Mills, Pennsylvania along Shaver s Creek . Hiking and fishing are among the activities available to visitors. The Pennsylvania State University contracted with the federal government in 1940 to construct roads and buildings on the land to help the school s educational program. In 1954 the land was given fully to the university. A dam was finished in 1960 to give easy access to the area, and Stone Valley Recreation Area was created. Stone Valley Recreation Area is a multi use park that is shared by the Penn State Forestry department, Shaver s Creek Environmental Center and Stone Valley Vertical Adventures. Vertical Adventures, which is operated by Penn State Athletics is a multi element high ropes challenge course serving the university and surrounding community with team development and group building. It also hosts a small summer program for middle school and high school children. The lake at Stone Valley Recreation Area was drained in 2008 when state regulations regarding dam specifications changed. Penn State is currently undertaking efforts to begin repairing the dam with the intention of filling it for the 2013 season. It was originally located on Darby Creek Pennsylvania Darby Creek , but was moved in 1961 when threatened with destruction. It was built by Henry Lawrence sometime in the 1730s. This small log house is typical of the first homes four early settlers built originally on the bank of Darby Creek at Old West Chester Pike. It was relocated by the Haverford Township Historical Society in 1961 when threatened by destruction. David Lawrence was one of the early Welsh settlers in Haverford Township. He emigrated with his wife Elinor Ellis and her family in 1684, and took up part of his father in law s land grant. His son Henry Lawrence purchased convert 209 acre km2 along Darby Creek in 1709. It has not been determined whether the log house pre dates this purchase but a 2 story stone addition was built circa 1730, and later a clapboard summer kitchen was added. It became known as the Three Generation House, and remained in Lawrence family ownership until 1942. A large fireplace dominates the first floor room, with a ladder leading to the sleeping loft. The house is furnished appropriately in the period before 1750, and is used for the Colonial Living Experience provided by The Haverford Township Historical Society for elementary school students. It is considered to be the first home built in Shawnee. A plaque near the cabin dates it to 1895. The cabin was built by Etta Ray and her father, P.H. Ray. Assisting were Etta s future brother in law, John Beard as well as John s sister, Lola Beard. Etta later married Henry Beard and they were the first inhabitants. Sleeping quarters are located on the upper floor of the cabin. The home is furnished and may be toured by making arrangements at the Santa Fe Depot Museum. In 1999, the cabin was restored and moved to its present location, near the Santa Fe Depot on Main Street, after being damaged in a windstorm at Woodland Park in Shawnee.
