Until 1961, the commemoration only related to the Dutch people Dutch victims of World War II . Since 1961, the victims of other military conflicts such as the Indonesian National Revolution in Indonesia and peacekeeping missions such as in Lebanon or Bosnia and Herzegovina Bosnia are remembered on May 4 as well. Traditionally, the main ceremonies are observed in Amsterdam at the National Monument Amsterdam National Monument on Dam Square . This ceremony is usually attended by members of the cabinet and the House of Orange Nassau royal family , military leaders, representatives of the Dutch resistance resistance movement and other social groups. The seven suicide bomber s subsequently killed themselves on 3 April 2004 while under siege by security forces in their apartment block. The new name, lang es Bosque del Recuerdo Forest of Remembrance , was chosen after the survivors and the victims families argued that those killed are for ever present and have never departed from their hearts. The memorial comprises 192 olive tree s and Cupressus sempervirens cypress es, one for each person killed, and is surrounded by a channel of water intended to symbolise life.
