Notability date June 2010 Unreferenced date September 2007 Strategy Safari FT Prentice Hall, 2002 , subtitled A Guided Tour Through the Wilds of Strategic Management by Henry Mintzberg , Bruce Ahlstrand and Joseph Lampel is an overview of the full field of academic and business studies of strategy, based on a previous lecture series by Mintzberg. Content In addition to an overview of existing meta theories of strategy, including the five Ps strategy as plan, ploy, pattern, perspective, position , the authors find ten separate schools of strategy, which are The environmental school The cognitive school The entrepreneurial school The power school The positioning school The cultural school The planning school The learning or emergent school The design school The configuration or transformation school The underlying thesis of the book is that the strategy beast is not any one of these, but that each school represents a partial picture of what strategy is. Academics may find it convenient to examine parts of strategy, assert the authors, but managers need to be able to work with the entire, living beast. Change in position Henry Mintzberg was previously known primarily for his advocacy of Emergent Strategy , and, subsequently, for his development of the Configuration School of strategy. Strategy Safari is a radical departure from Mintzberg s previous position, in that it seeks to understand, categorise, and find value in the entire range of strategic thinking. With his co authors Ahlstrand and Lampel, Mintzberg reviewed more than 2,000 texts in preparation of Strategy Safari. Assessment FT Prentice Hall s Mastering Strategy begins with a monograph summary of Strategy Safari, written by the original authors. 1. Investment strategy

In finance , an investment strategy is a set of rules, behaviors or procedures, designed to guide an investor s selection of an investment Portfolio finance portfolio . Usually the strategy will be designed around the investor s risk return tradeoff some investors will prefer to maximize expected returns by investing in risky assets, others will prefer to minimize risk, but most will select a strategy somewhere in between. Passive management Passive strategies are often used to minimize transaction cost s, and active management active strategies such as market timing are an attempt to maximize returns. One of the better known investment strategies is buy and hold . Buy and hold is a long term investment strategy, based on the concept that in the long run equity market s give a good rate of return despite periods of Volatility finance volatility or decline. A purely passive variant of this strategy is Index fund indexing , where an investor buys a small proportion of all the shares in a market index such as the S&P 500 , or more likely, in a mutual fund called an index fund or an exchange traded fund ETF . This viewpoint also holds that market timing , that one can enter the market on the lows and sell on the highs, does not work or does not work for small investors, so it is better to simply buy and hold. The smaller, retail investor more typically uses the buy and hold investment strategy in real estate investment where the holding period is typically the lifespan of their mortgage. 1. Inkspot Strategy

Refimprove date December 2009 Orphan date February 2009 The inkblot strategy is a military strategy for subduing a large hostile region with a relatively small military force. The occupying force starts by establishing a number of small safe areas dispersed over the region. It then pushes out from each area, extending its control and making the areas larger until eventually they join up, leaving only pockets of resistance. The name of the strategy refers to the way ink spots spread on a piece of blotting paper or tissue, starting as tiny scattered points but spreading to cover most or all of the paper. Historically, the inkblot strategy is associated with the Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War . More recently, the term has been used in reference to the NATO campaign in Afghanistan and the American led campaign against the Iraq insurgency . ref Greg Mills, Calibrating Inkspots Filling Afghanistan s Ungoverned Spaces , RUSI Journal , August 2006, http www.thebrenthurstfoundation.org files Calibrating Ink Spots.pdf . ref References reflist Category Military strategy ...   more details
