The star then contracts until hydrogen fuses in a shell surrounding a helium rich core, both of which are surrounded by an envelope consisting primarily of hydrogen. The core increases in mass as the shell burns its way outwards through the star. If the star s mass is less than approximately 1.5 solar mass es, the core will become degenerate before the Sch nberg Chandrasekhar limit is reached, and, on the other hand, if the mass is greater than approximately 6 solar mass es, gravitational collapse will release so much energy that the core will not become isothermal ... reflist DEFAULTSORT Schonberg Chandrasekhar Limit Category Astrophysics sv Chandrasekhar Schenberg ...   more details

  1. Basilis C. Xanthopoulos

File Xanthopoulos Chandrasekhar.jpg thumb Xanthopoulos with S. Chandrasekhar Nobel of Physics 1983 Basilis C. Xanthopoulos 1951 November 27, 1990 was a Greece Greek theoretical physicist , well known in the field of general relativity for his contributions to the study of colliding plane wave s. Xanthopoulos was born in Drama, Greece Drama . After majoring in mathematics at the University of Thessaloniki he moved to the University of Chicago , where he earned his Ph.D. in 1978. During this time, he collaborated with Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar on colliding plane waves. In particular, they discovered an exact solution which models two gravitational plane wave s which collide, interact nonlinearly, and create in the interaction zone a curved region of spacetime which is local isometry locally isometric to the Kerr metric Kerr vacuum . This is now called the Chandrasekhar Xanthopoulos colliding plane wave model. Xanthopoulos and his colleague Stephanos Pnevmatikos were murdered by a 32 year old disgruntled post graduate student, named Giorgos Petrodaskalakis who later committed suicide Citation needed date September 2008 , on the evening of November 27, 1990 at the University of Crete .
