  1. Self-sufficiency

Self sufficiency is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction, for survival it is therefore a type of personal or collective autonomy . On a national scale, a totally self sufficient economy that does not trade with the outside world is called an autarky . The term self sufficiency is usually applied to varieties of sustainable living in which nothing is consumed outside of what is produced by the self sufficient individuals. Examples of attempts at self sufficiency in North America include simple living , homesteading , off the grid , survivalism , DIY ethic and the back to the land movement . Practices that enable or aid self sufficiency include autonomous building , permaculture , sustainable agriculture , and renewable energy . The term is also applied to limited forms of self sufficiency, for example growing one s own food or becoming economically independent of state subsidy subsidies . 1. Eco-sufficiency

Expand German Suffizienz kologie date January 2012 One source date January 2009 Eco sufficiency requires a reduction of the level of production consumption in those parts of the world with the highest standard of living standards of living beyond reducing the use of natural resources as well as waste and emissions per unit of production consumption decoupling delinking . Given a very loose relation in rich countries between material wealth, GDP and human well being, this might be possible even without reducing the latter, while, for example, increasing leisure and non material activities for well being. There are potentials to reduce substantially the use of natural resources without compromising human wealth. However, many studies show that economic growth eats up these gains at least partially if the economy grows by 2 per annum we need an increasing resource productivity by 4 in order to achieve a 2 reduction of the absolute resource use. While eco efficiency aims to improve the effectiveness of material, energy, and land use, eco sufficiency aims at reducing negative environmental consequences through a reduction of the demand for consumer goods. Eco sufficiency is closely related to issues of quality of life and work life balance . It can to some extent be achieved on the individual level, e.g. through energy savings, reduction of transport and change in diets less meat . However, it also requires a change in social frameworks, provided on the national or European level, including measures such as ecotax environmental tax es, environmental planning and new concepts of labour. Eco sufficiency is largely associated with the idea of altruism the sober lifestyle adopted by its advocates is a manifestation of their concern for the well being of future generations and thus to date is endorsed by only a small minority of members of industrialised societies. A wide spread of eco sufficiency will only occur, if people find the new lifestyles sufficiently attractive. It needs ...   more details

  1. Self-Sufficiency Project

The Self Sufficiency Project was a Canadian experiment in the 1990s that provided a generous, time limited earnings supplement available to single parents who had been on welfare for a least a year, and who subsequently left welfare and found full time work. ref Michalopoulos , Charles, Philip K. Robins and David Card. 2005. When financial work incentives pay for themselves evidence from a randomized social experiment for welfare recipients. Journal of Public Economics. ref The study found that individuals offered a SSP subsidy were four percent more likely to stay on welfare to receive the benefit, but once people qualified for the SSP supplement, 44 left welfare dependence and were employed full time defined as working at least 30 hours a week. The program was interesting since increases in employment boosted payroll and other taxes to a large enough extent that the subsidy paid for itself. 1. Foundation for Self Sufficiency in Central America

Orphan date February 2009 The Foundation for Self Sufficiency in Central America FSSCA is a non profit organization headquartered in Austin, Texas Austin , Texas that works in partnership and solidarity with low income communities in Central America . FSSCA supports grassroots development emphasizing environmental sustainability, economic self sufficiency , social justice, and peace. History FSSCA was founded in 1996 with the intent of assisting the recovery of the people of Central America from the aftermath of the brutal Salvadoran Civil War 1980 1992 . FSSCA s original executive director, Jos Inocencio Alas , has been honored by the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding with its Peace Activist Award in recognition of his dedication to human rights, and notably for his efforts to preserve peace in El Salvador during the violent aftermath of its civil war . Alas is profiled in the Tannebaum Center s recent publication, Peacemakers in Action Profiles of Religion in Conflict Resolution , scheduled for release by Cambridge University Press in March 2007. Since 1998 , FSSCA has worked in partnership with the communities comprising the Coordinadora del Bajo Lempa near the Pacific Coast of El Salvador . The Coordinadora was originally formed from the mix of settlers relocated under the land reform provisions of the 1993 peace accords onto former plantation land in the Lempa River delta region. Primarily farmers and fishers, settlers organized in the mid 1990s to eliminate disastrous flooding, aggravated when floodgates upstream were opened without warning to the settlers along the river delta below. Their leadership evolved on a democratic model to attain sustainable development beyond flood control. In 1998, the Coordinadora s communities committed themselves to ending the violence endemic to the region since the end of El Salvador s civil war. They declared their communities ... 1. Completeness (statistics)

Refimprove date August 2009 In statistics , completeness is a property of a statistic in relation to a model for a set of observed data. In essence, it is a condition which ensures that the parameters of the probability distribution representing the model can all be estimated on the basis of the statistic it ensures that the distributions corresponding to different values of the parameters are distinct. It is closely related to the idea of identifiability , but in statistical theory it is often found as a condition imposed on a sufficient statistic from which certain optimality results are derived.
