    Pir or Peer lang fa , literally old person is a title for a Sufi master equally used in the nath tradition. They are also referred to as a Hazrat or Shaikh , which is Arabic for Old Man. The title is often translated into English as saint and could be interpreted as Elder Christianity Elder . In Sufism a Pir s role is to guide and instruct his disciples on the Sufi path. This is often done by general lessons called Suhbas and individual guidance. Other words that refer to a Pir include, Murshid lang ar , meaning guide or teacher , Sheikh and Sarkar Persian Hindi Urdu word meaning Master, Lord . The path of Sufism starts when a student takes an oath of allegiance with a teacher called Bai ath or Bay ah Arabic word meaning Transaction . After that, the student is called a Murid Arabic word meaning committed one . A Pir usually has authorizations to be a teacher for one or more Tariqah s paths . A Tariqah may have more than one Pir at a time. A Pir is accorded that status by his Shaikh by way of Khilafat or Khilafah Arabic word meaning succession . Khilafat is the process in which a Shaikh identifies one of his disciples as his successor Caliph khalifah . A Pir can have more than one khalifah .     A Qayyum pronounced Qayyoom, Arabic Urdu Nastaliq is a special spiritual position in Sufism, especially in the Naqshbandi tradition. The term was first coined by Ahmed Sirhindi , who was the first qayyum . According to him, a qayyum is a dignitary upon whom the whole order of existence depends. The word is derived from Al Qayyum , a name of God in Islam that has the same meaning. According to the doctrine, only one qayyum is alive at any particular time. Dhikr is literally remembering. It is the religious ceremony, or act of devotion, which is practised by the various Sufi orders. Universal Sufi Dhikr differs from the Islamic form of Dhikr, widening the scope of the term to encompass remembrance of the spiritual in all forms. Dhikr formulas are usually given specifically to each individual murid , and their formulas are kept private. The Sikh belief in Nam is very closely linked to the Universal Sufi belief that God existed before the creation of the universe. The name of God is therefore beyond the language structure created by mankind. The Nam is the internal rhythm that a person experiences is the true nature of God.
