Synonyms include hepar sulfuris , liver of sulfur , sulfurated potash and sulfurated potassa . Liver of sulfur is mainly used in metalworking to form a patina , turning copper alloys brown or black. Typically liver of sulfur comes in a dry rock form which must be broken into smaller pieces and dissolved in hot water for use. Lump form The drawbacks to liver of sulfur in dry form are the following Shelf Life Lump form liver of sulfur has a very short shelf life. Flammability Lump form liver of sulfur is considered a flammable solid. Inhalation hazard Lump form liver of sulfur can cause an inhalation hazard due to the dust created by handling it or breaking the larger chunks into smaller pieces. Gel form Liver of sulfur is also available in a gel form. The primary benefit of the gel form being the reduced potential for harm as an inhalant. In fact, the town of Soufri re got its name from the sulfur mining in the 19th century. Sulfur Springs was a formerly active dome volcano that had its last major eruption 40,000 years ago. Its last minor eruption occurred in 1780. The volcano s dome collapsed many years ago to form a convert 7 acre m2 sing on caldera . Although there has not been an eruption for over 200 years, sulfur still billows from the cracks in the caldera. Also, there are active boiling mud pits around the area. Cement commonly Portland cement and water properties water important compounds in normal concrete are not part of sulfur concrete. The concrete is heated above the melting point of sulfur ca. 140 C. After cooling the concrete reaches a high strength, not needing a prolonged curing like normal concrete. Sulfur concrete is resistant to some compounds like acids which attack normal concrete. Sulfur concrete was developed and promoted as building material to get rid of large amounts of stored sulfur produced by hydrodesulfurization of gas and oil. Unreferenced date December 2009 Sulfur dyes are the most commonly used dye s manufactured for cotton in terms of volume. They are cheap, generally have good wash fastness and are easy to apply. The dyes are absorbed by cotton from a bath containing sodium sulfide or sodium hydrosulfite and are made insoluble within the fiber by oxidation . During this process these dyes form complex larger molecule s which is the basis of their good wash fastness. These dyes have good all round fastness except to chlorine. Due to the highly polluting nature of the dye bath effluent , slowly sulfur dyes are being phased out. Sulfur dyes are primarily used for dark colors such as blacks, browns, and dark blues. The deep indigo blues of denim blue jeans are a product of sulfur dyes. Recent advances in dyeing technologies have allowed the substitution of toxic sulfide reducing agents. Glucose is now used and both low sulfide and zero sulfide products are available. Future developments in the field of reducing dye levels by means of electro chemical processes are promising. This work is just in the research stage but is expected to come to industry very soon. This may eradicate the problems of polluting sulfides. Sulfur dyes are water insoluble. They have to be treated with a reducing agent and an alkali at temperature of around 80 degrees Celsius where the dye breaks into small particles which then becomes water soluble and hence can be absorbed by the fabric.
