The SundaShelf mangroves ecoregion , in the Mangrove Biome , are on the coasts of the islands of Borneo and eastern Sumatra in Malaysia and Indonesia . They are home to the Proboscis Monkey . As well as being an important habitat for terrestrial and marine wildlife mangroves preserve the shape of the coastline. Flora There are more plant species here than in most mangrove forests in the world, with five different types of mangrove dominating parts of the region as follows Avicennia and Sonneratia species on the coast where water is saltiest and the tidal wash strongest Rhizophora s and Bruguiera s in the swampy areas just behind them and Nypa fruticans palms in the freshwater streams further inland still. Fauna Mammals of the mangroves include the proboscis monkey Nasalis larvatus , which solely inhabits these swampy coastal habitats. There are also many species of birds. Threats and preservation Mangroves are vulnerable ecosystems as trees are cut for timber, firewood and to clear land for agriculture and urban development such as shrimp farming. This loss of habitat persists despite the mangroves being part of a large number of protected areas including on Borneo Bako National Park in Malaysia and Tanjung Puting and Gunung Palung National Park s in Indonesia, and on Sumatra Berbak National Park Berbak and Sembilang National Park s. ref cite web title SundaShelf mangroves IM1405 author publisher worldwildlife.org date url http www.worldwildlife.org wildworld profiles terrestrial im im1405 full.html accessdate October 3, 2010 ref References Reflist Category Mangrove ecoregions Category Ecoregions of Malaysia Category Ecoregions of Indonesia Category Flora of Indonesia Category Flora of Malaysia Category Indomalaya ecozone ... more details

Image Tectonics Sumatra quake.gif thumb upright Western Sunda Arc and Trench showing tectonic and seismic activity. The Sunda Arc is a volcanic arc that has produced the islands of Sumatra and Java island Java , the Sunda Strait and the Lesser Sunda Islands . A chain of volcano es forms the topographic spine of these islands. The arc marks an active convergent boundary between the East Eurasian plates that underlie Indonesia , especially the Sunda Plate and the Burma Plate , with the India Plate India and Australian Plate s that form the seabed of the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal . The Sunda Arc is a classic example of a volcanic island arc , in which all the elements of such geodynamic features can be identified. The India and Australian Plates are subduction subducting beneath the Sunda and Burma plates along the Sunda Arc. The tectonic deformation along this subduction zone in the Java Trench also known as the Sunda Trench caused the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake of December 26, 2004. The Sunda Arc is home to some of the world s most dangerous and explosive volcanoes. The eruption of Mount Tambora on Sumbawa Island , in 1815, is thought to be the most massive in recorded history. Also this subduction zone has created arguably the world s largest active volcano Lake Toba which produced the largest volcanic eruption in human history erupting just over 2,800 km of magma, a VEI of 8. The loudest noise in recorded history occurred during the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa and was heard convert 5,000 km mi abbr on away. Indonesianmusic Tembang sunda , also called seni mamaos cianjuran is a style of classical vocal music that originated in the Sunda Kingdom of highland west Java . Unlike Sundanese gamelan music, tembang sunda was developed in the court of the regent Kabupaten Cianjur during the Dutch colonial period mid nineteenth century . The traditional vocal portion is sung free verse poetry, the instrumental accompaniment being performed on kacapi zither , suling bamboo flute and sometimes, rebab violin . A more modern, and metrical, form of lyrics exists that is called panambih . Kacapi suling is played to ornament the vocals, and also at interludes between songs at a typical Tembang Sunda performance. The higher pitched kacapi rincik , the lower pitched kacapi indung and the suling flute are the instruments used for kacapi suling. Kacapi suling has instrumental pieces performed in two different scales the first four in laras pelog convey a light mood, the last four, in laras sorog are more slow and grave. The change to laras sorog usually takes place at midnight and lasts til sunrise.
