The series features the law practice of Alanna Wolff and Jeff Byrd , who specialize in serving the legal needs of monsters and other supernatural beings, or those who find themselves in conflict with such beings. Wolff and Byrd themselves are human, as is their secretary Mavis . In Search of the Supernatural , Sou sh n chi or Sou shen ji , pinyin S ush nj , literally Records of Searching for Spirits is a 4th century CE China Chinese compilation of legends, short stories and hearsay concerning spirits, ghosts and other supernatural phenomena. Although the authorship of the book is not made explicit in the text, it is believed to have been written and compiled by Gan Bao , a historian at the court of Emperor Yuan of Jin sometimes wrongly referred to as Y Pao in 350 AD.
