A gore or, sometimes, a grant , in parts of the northeastern United States mainly northern New England , is an unincorporated area of a county that is not part of any town and has limited self government if any, as many are uninhabited . Historically, gores were generally the result of errors when the land was first surveyed and the towns laid out. A gore would lie in an area between two supposedly abutting towns but would technically be in neither. Surrounding towns have been known to absorb a gore &mdash for example, the gore between Tunbridge, Vermont Tunbridge , Vermont , and Royalton, Vermont , was eventually attributed to Tunbridge. Some gores have become towns in their own right, such as Stannard, Vermont . Different states have different laws governing gores and other unincorporated territories. It was composed of a wooden frame, made in the form of a beam which was fitted with a water level, and two supports at the end of the beam. It is described by Vitruvius Lib. viii . It is believed to be the instrument that was used to level the Roman aqueduct s. The beam had a plumb bob at each end so that it could be placed square on the ground. A groove was made in the top of the beam for use as a sightline, and the beam was parallel to the water level. It enabled levels to be found between two points, and hence a series of levels when planning and surveying the path for an aqueduct. In geodesy and surveying a control network or simply control , is a set of reference points of known geospatial coordinates . The higher order high precision, usually millimeter to decimeter on a scale of continents control points are normally defined in both space and time using global or space techniques, and are used for lower order points to be tied into. The lower order control points are normally used for engineering , construction and navigation . The scientific discipline that deals with the establishing of coordinates of points in a high order control network is called geodesy , and the technical discipline that does the same for points in a low order control network is called surveying .
