The Susitna Hydroelectric Project commonly called the Susitna Dam is a proposed Hydroelectricity hydroelectric power project along the SusitnaRiver in southern Alaska . The project, which originally consisted of two dams along the river, was proposed as early as the 1960s to supply electricity to the railbelt region of Alaska areas served by the Alaska Railroad , including the cities of Anchorage, Alaska Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska Fairbanks . When oil prices and state revenue based on taxes levied on oil extraction declined, the plan was put on hold. When oil prices rose to then record highs in 2008, the rising price of electricity in Alaska caused a revival of interest in the proposal. Each year approximately 10 percent of the waterfowl harvest in the state of Alaska occurs on Susitna Flats, with about 15,000 duck s and over 500 goose geese taken. Many hunters land float plane s on one of the numerous lakes on the flats. Other hunters cross the inlet by boat to enjoy their hunt. Birds Perhaps the most spectacular feature of the Susitna Flats State Game Refuge and certainly the prime reason for its refuge status is the spring and fall concentration of migrating waterfowl and shorebirds. Usually by mid April, mallard duck mallards , pintail duck pintails , and Canada goose Canada geese are present in large numbers. Peak densities are reached in early May when as many as 100,000 waterfowl are using the refuge to feed, rest, and conduct their final courtship prior to nesting. The refuge also hosts several thousand lesser sandhill crane s and upwards of 8,000 swan s. Northern phalarope s, dowitcher s, godwit s, whimbrel s, snipe , yellowlegs , sandpiper s, plover s, and dunlin are among the most abundant of shorebirds. Located within a roadless area, access to the river is difficult and is made usually by power boat from the SusitnaRiver or by floatplane. The Matanuska Susitna Borough, Alaska Matanuska Susitna Borough owns much of the land along the final ten miles of the Deshka. The impacts of summer recreational use and tourists have caused loss of riparian vegetation and bank erosion along the Deshka s lower reaches, which has been partially remedied through a restoration project in the summer of 2002. However, the borough currently lacks either regulations to prevent further damage or the means to enforce such regulations. Citation needed date June ...
