Counting Heads is an expansion of Marusek s 1995 short story Getting to Know You short story collection We Were Out of Our Minds with Joy , which serves as the first chapter of Counting Heads with minor revisions from its original rendition as a short story . Mind Over Ship , a sequel to Counting Heads , was released on January 20, 2009. ref http www.nytimes.com 2006 03 05 books review 05itzkoff.html ref Analysis The extended story from We Were Out of Our Minds with Joy , happening in 2092 4, occupies the first part of the novel. The other two parts are set 40 years later, in 2134. This is the story of an over crowded humanity. The individual is obsolete here, even the family is a fluid notion. In such a world as described by Marusek, social institutions are oversized and functioning on weird principles. This is a world of caste system and clones. Even that the plot is basically a murder espionage mystery, because of the satire and the black humour, but also of the deep analysis of the human soul, the novel is convincing realistic. 1. Heads of Proposals

The Heads Of The Proposals was a set of propositions intended to be a basis for a constitutional settlement after Charles I of England King Charles I was defeated in the first English Civil War . ref Plant, http www.british civil wars.co.uk glossary heads of proposals.htm Heads of the Proposals, 1647 ref It was drafted in the summer of 1647 by Commissionary General Henry Ireton and Major General John Lambert General John Lambert . wikisource Main propositions The main propositions were Royalists had to wait five years before running for or holding an office. The Book of Common Prayer was allowed to be read but not mandatory, and no penalties should be made for not going to church, or attending other acts of worship. The sitting Parliament was to set a date for its own termination. Thereafter, biennial Parliaments were to be called i.e. every two years , which would sit for a minimum of 120 days and maximum of 240 days. Constituencies were to be reorganized. Episcopacy would be retained in church government, but the power of the bishops would be substantially reduced. Parliament was to control the appointment of state officials and officers in the army and navy for 10 years. King Charles reaction Even after the occupation of London by the New Model Army had taken place, Parliament, instead of taking up the Heads of the Proposals as the basis of a settlement of the kingdom, sent to the King a revised edition of the Newcastle Propositions , differing mainly in that it proposed a limited toleration for dissentient Puritans, whilst forbidding all use of the book of Common Prayer ..., and the Scots the Second English Civil War started. The piece uses multiple extended techniques. Condensed from roughly 80 other compositions, the work was originally composed for Eugene Chadbourne . Zorn learned the extended techniques from Chadbourne, and used them to create a piece that would push Chadbourne s virtuosity to new levels. Zorn incorporated new techniques, such as rubbing balloons on the guitar strings until they pop, holding talking dolls up to the microphone, pulling the guitar strings out of the bridge notch, hitting the strings with pencils, and playing with rice. He also used classical guitar techniques, such as hitting the body of the guitar and multiple harmonics. Reception The Allmusic review by Satcia Proefrock awarded the album 3 stars stating Ribot is obviously having fun on this release, and he has been praised by Zorn for the care he took in its execution. The Manukau Heads is the name given to the two promontory promontories that form the entrance to the Manukau Harbour one of the two harbours of Auckland in New Zealand . The southern head is simply termed The South Head , whereas the northern head is named Burnett Head the term North Head, New Zealand North Head is used to indicate a promontory in the nearby Waitemata Harbour . Both heads are hilly areas of land that rise steeply from the water to over 240m within less than 400m of the shoreline. Citation needed date February 2011 There is a pronounced sand bar across the harbour mouth which has limited shipping into the harbour since European vessels arrived in the area which had enough draught to be affected by such shallows. This limitation which ensured an effective maximum ship size of about 1,000 tons in pre modern times , was no barrier to early success of shipping to local ports in the harbour but eventually meant that the Waitemata Harbour overtook the Manukau Harbour in prominence as a port location. ref name SOLDIERS cite news title Auckland Soldiers of fortune url http www.nzherald.co.nz panmure news article.cfm?l id 356&objectid 10667027 accessdate 5 February 2011 newspaper The New Zealand Herald date 26 August 2010 ref New Zealand s worst maritime disaster occurred just offshore in 1863 when HMS Orpheus 1861 HMS Orpheus ran aground on the Manukau Bar and sank with the loss of 189 lives. ref name DROWNS The area remains dangerous for watercraft, with one death each in 2005 and 2010 when pleasure craft capsized or were swamped near the bar. ref name DROWNS cite news url http www.nzherald.co.nz auckland region news article.cfm?l id 117&objectid 10619334 title Man drowns in harbour author Matt Nippert and Alice Neville date 10 January 2010 work Herald on Sunday accessdate 19 October ...   more details
