In linguistics , open syllable lengthening is the process by which Short vowel short vowels become long when in an open syllable . It occurs in many languages at a phonetic or Allophone allophonic level, where no meaningful distinction in length is made. However, as it became phonemic in the Germanic languages , it is especially significant there, both historically and in the modern languages. Germanic languages Open syllable lengthening affected the stressed syllables of all Germanic languages in their history to some degree. Curiously, it seems to have affected all the languages around a similar time, somewhere between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries the late Middle Ages . The languages mainly differ in which vowels were lengthened and in which specific environment, but also in what the result of this lengthening was. There is substantial variation and in many languages the process has been largely undone by paradigmatic leveling . Sometimes, the newly lengthened vowels merged with existing long vowels, while in other languages they remained distinct because the older long vowels underwent changes of their own such as in Icelandic, and in the Scandinavian languages to a lesser degree . The lengthening often also applied in reverse at some point, shortening long vowels in closed syllables. As a consequence of the combination of these two changes, vowel length and consonant length came to be in complementary distribution . Because of that, consonant length was no longer a distinctive feature, and long consonants were shortened in many languages at some point afterwards. The objective is to guess the code of other players while preventing the discovery of your own code. The game has been marketed under the titles Da Vinci Code and Da Vinci Code The Game . In spite of this, it has no connection to the novel The Da Vinci Code . Gameplay The game is played using twelve black and twelve white tiles numbered from 0 to 11 on one side. Initially all the tiles are laid face down on the table. Each player then chooses four tiles three tiles if there are four players and arranges them secretly in growing order with the smallest number on the left to make his her code. If the code contains the same number twice, the black tile is always considered as smaller than the white one. A player turn consists in drawing one of the remaining tiles, looking at it secretly and proposing a value for one of the hidden tiles in an opponent code. If the proposed value is not correct, the player must reveal the tile he she has drawn and insert it at the correct place within his her own code giving consequently information about his her code. If the proposed value was correct the opponent must reveal the matching tile in his code, and the active player may decide go on proposing values for hidden opponent tiles until he she either guesses incorrecttly or decides to stop. About the musical feature The Cauda is a characteristic feature of songs in the Conductus style of a cappella music which flourished between the mid 12th and the mid 13th century. The conductus style placed strict rules on composition, and some such rules were devoted to the cauda, which came at the penultimate syllable of each verse. It takes the form of a lengthy section of counterpoint where several simultaneous melodies are combined into one slurred over the one syllable. The cauda was repeated in each verse.
