  1. Symphonic cycle

A symphonic song cycle can either refer to a symphony composed of separate Movement music movements played consecutively or to a set of symphonic works linked by theme, common composer, or common conductor. A symphonic cycle should not be confused with the closely related song cycle . Symphonic cycle as a whole symphonic work A symphony is essentially cyclic in nature, typically containing four interconnected movements as part of a larger work. At first the movements of a symphony were meant to be distributed among other works arias , overtures , concertos in extended evening social events at which music served a background or occasionally center role. The movements were meant to be connected and identified as part of the symphonic cycle through recall and quotation of earlier movements, and the finale movement meant to be seen as a destination and recap. It was not until Beethoven that a symphonic cycle came to be seen as a work needing isolated, consecutive play of the constituent movements. ref cite book last Brown first A. Peter title The Symphonic Repertoire publisher Indiana University Press year 2002 isbn 025333487X ref Symphonic cycle as a set of works A symphonic cycle may also refer to a set of symphonies linked through a common composer or conductor. For example, the symphonic repertoire of Ludwig van Beethoven , consisting of his nine numbered symphonies, may be wholly referred to as the Beethoven symphonic cycle. Another conception of the symphonic cycle is that of a set of composer s works as performed and recorded on audio visual media by a common conductor. 1. Symphonic Sketches

refimprove date January 2007 Symphonic Sketches was composed by George Whitefield Chadwick from about 1895 to 1904. Each of the four movements is inspired by a scene depiction, much like snapshots in an album, drawings, or vignettes. The style largely stems from Chadwick s experience with the Duveneck Boys , a group of free spirited artists led by Frank Duveneck . Analysis The piece consists of four movements 1. Jubilee br 2. No l br 3. Hobgoblin br 4. A Vagrom Ballad The composer s intentions are specified by bits of poetry opposite each title page. For sketch No. 1, Jubilee , No cool gray tones for me br Give me the warmest red and green, br A cornet and a tambourine, br To paint my Jubilee For when pale flutes and oboes play, Br To sadness I become a prey br Give me the violets and the May, br But no gray skies for me. For Sketch No. 2, No l , Through the soft, calm moonlight comes a sound br A mother lulls her babe, and all around br The gentle snow lies glistening br On such a night the Virgin Mother mild br In dreamless slumber wrapped the Holy Child, br While angel hosts were listening. The opening poem is reminiscent of the Christmas song Silent Night . 1. A Pagan Poem

A Pagan Poem is a tone poem for orchestra composed in 1906 by Charles Martin Loeffler . Originally scored for piano , woodwind s, violin , and contrabass , the work was soon rescored for two pianos and three trumpet s. The final version, which in addition to traditional forces included piano obbligato , solo English horn , and three solo trumpets, was introduced on November 23, 1907 by the Boston Symphony under the direction of Karl Muck . Loeffler derived his inspiration for the work from the eighth eclogue of Virgil , in which a maiden of Thessaly uses magic to revive her lover s ardor once he has deserted her. Rather than follow the program literally, the composer chose to depict moods and feelings suggested by the text. The trumpets are used offstage, first against a background of piano and timpani and next as chromatic accompaniment to a declamation from the English horn.
