  1. Synaptonemal complex

Image Synaptonemal complex.png left 200px thumb The synaptonemal complex is a protein structure that forms between homologous chromosomes two pairs of sister chromatids during meiosis and that is thought to mediate chromosome pairing, synapsis , and Genetic recombination recombination Chromosomal crossover crossing over . It is now evident that the synaptonemal complex is not required for genetic recombination. Research has shown that not only does it form after genetic recombination but mutant yeast cells unable to assemble a synaptonemal complex can still engage in the exchange of genetic information. It is currently thought that the SC functions primarily as a scaffold to allow interacting chromatids to complete their crossover activities. The synaptonemal complex is a tripartite structure consisting of two parallel lateral regions and a central element. Three specific components of the synaptonemal complex have been characterized SC protein 1 SYCP1 , SC protein 2 SYCP2 , and SC protein 3 SYCP3 . In humans, the SYCP1 gene is on chromosome 1p13 the SYCP2 gene is on chromosome 20q13.33 and the gene for SYCP3 is on chromosome 12q. The synaptonemal complex SC was described by Montrose J. Moses in 1956 in primary spermatocytes of crayfish and by D. Fawcett in spermatocytes of pigeon, cat and man. As seen with the electron microscope, the synaptonemal complex is formed by two lateral elements , mainly formed by SYCP3 and secondarily by SYCP2, a central element that contains at least two additional proteins and the amino terminal region of SYCP1, and a central region spanned between the two lateral elements, that contains the transverse filaments composed mainly by the protein ... events or crossovers . 1. Complex representation

The term complex representation has slightly different meanings in mathematics and physics. In mathematics , a complex representation is a group representation of a group or Lie algebra on a complex vector space. In physics , a complex representation is a group representation of a group or Lie algebra on a complex vector space that is neither real representation real nor pseudoreal representation pseudoreal . In other words, the Group mathematics group elements are expressed as complex matrices, and the complex conjugate of a complex representation is a different, non equivalent representation. For compact groups, the Frobenius Schur indicator can be used to tell whether a representation is real, complex, or pseudo real. For example, the N dimensional fundamental representation of SU N for N greater than two is a complex representation whose complex conjugate is often called the antifundamental representation . algebra stub Category Representation theory of groups ...   more details

  1. Complex dimension

Unreferenced date December 2009 In mathematics , complex dimension usually refers to the dimension of a complex manifold M , or complex algebraic variety V . If the complex dimension is d , the real dimension will be 2 d . That is, the smooth manifold M has dimension 2 d and away from any Mathematical singularity singular points V will also be a smooth manifold of dimension 2 d . The same points apply to codimension . For example a smooth complex hypersurface in complex projective space of dimension n will be a manifold of dimension 2 n &minus 1 . A complex hyperplane does not separate complex projective space into two components, because it has codimension 2. 1. Complex manifold

The term complex manifold is variously used to mean a complex manifold in the sense above which can be specified as an integrable complex manifold , and an Almost complex structures almost complex manifold , as discussed below. Implications of complex structure Since holomorphic function s are much more rigid than smooth function s, the theories of smooth and complex manifolds have very different flavors compact complex manifolds ... submanifold of R sup n sup , whereas it is rare for a complex manifold to have a holomorphic embedding into C sup n sup . Complex manifolds that can be embedded in C sup ..., smooth complex affine algebraic varieties. The classification of complex manifolds is much more subtle ... a complex structure can and often does support uncountably many complex structures. 1. Complex space

In mathematics , n dimensional complex space is a multi dimensional generalisation of the complex number s, which have both real number real and imaginary number imaginary parts or dimensions. The n dimensional complex space can be seen as n cartesian product s of the complex numbers with itself math C n underbrace C times C times cdots times C n text times math The n dimensional complex space consists of ordered n tuples of complex numbers, called coordinate s math C n z 1, ldots,z n z i in C text for all 1 le i le n math The real and imaginary parts of a complex number may be treated as separate dimensions. With this interpretation, the space math C n math of n complex numbers can be seen as having math 2 times n math dimensions. This can cause confusion. The study of complex spaces, or complex manifold s, is called complex geometry . One dimension The complex line math C 1 math has one real and one imaginary dimension. It is analogous in some ways to two dimensional real space, and may be represented as an Argand diagram in the real plane. In projective geometry , the complex projective line includes a point at infinity in the Argand diagram and is an example of a Riemann sphere . Two dimensions The term complex plane can be confusing. It is sometimes used to denote math C 2 math , and sometimes to denote the math C 1 math space represented in the Argand diagram with the Riemann sphere referred to as the extended complex plane . In the present context of math C n math , it is understood to denote math C 2 math . An intuitive understanding of the complex projective plane is given by Edwards 2003 , which he attributes to Von Staudt . References Djoric, M. & Okumura, M. 1. Complex torus

In mathematics , a complex torus is a particular kind of complex manifold M whose underlying smooth manifold is a torus in the usual sense i.e. the cartesian product of some number N circle s . Here N must be the even number 2 n , where n is the complex dimension of M . All such complex structures can be obtained as follows take a lattice group lattice in C sup n sup considered as real vector space then the quotient group C sup n sup &Lambda is a compact space compact complex manifold. All complex tori, up to isomorphism, are obtained in this way. For n 1 this is the classical period lattice construction of elliptic curve s. For n 1 Bernhard Riemann found necessary and sufficient conditions for a complex torus to be an algebraic variety those that are varieties can be embedded into complex projective space , and are the abelian varieties . The actual projective embeddings are complicated see equations defining abelian varieties when n 1, and are really coextensive with the theory of theta function s of several complex variable s with fixed modulus . There is nothing as simple as the cubic curve description for n 1. Computer algebra can handle cases for small n reasonably well. By Chow s theorem , no complex torus other than the abelian varieties can fit into projective space. 1. Superman complex

A Superman Complex is an unhealthy sense of responsibility, or the belief that everyone else lacks the capacity to successfully perform one or more tasks. Such a person may feel a constant need to save others. The expression seems to have been first been used by Dr. Fredric Wertham in his 1954 book Seduction of the Innocent and his testimony before the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency . He claimed that children reading Superman comic books were exposed to http www.crimeboss.com history03 2.html phantasies of sadistic joy in seeing other people punished over and over again while you yourself remain immune. A Superman complex is what occurs to young adults and adults, specifically men that are between the age of 17 through 35. Nothing can damage them. Superman is nearly invincible as they see themselves within these years. Whether by accomplished superiority in a physical fight, a mental battle with a test or an exam, or a witty remark between friends or against a person that one feels needs ridiculing. Once there is an occurrence to the individual who has a superman complex, such as an injury, or a stubborn point that gets undermined, the person then realizes there is a limit to the abilities of that person physically and mentally, this reminds the individual of his physical and mental limits to the Superman Complex . A Superman Complex can also be a result of traumatic stress, where it takes an underlying form, and comes out only when a similar situation occurs.
