A syringe driver or syringe pump is a small infusion pump some include infuse and withdraw capability , used to gradually Route of administration administer small amounts of fluid with or without medication to a patient or for use in chemical and biomedical research. The most popular use of syringe drivers is in palliative care , to continuously administer analgesic s painkillers , antiemetic s medication to suppress nausea and vomiting and other drugs. This prevents periods during which medication levels in the blood are too high or too low, and avoids the use of multiple tablets especially in people who have difficulty swallowing . As the medication is administered Subcutis subcutaneously , the area for administration is practically limitless, although edema may interfere with the action of some drugs. Syringe drivers are also useful for delivering IV medications over several minutes. In the case of a medication which should be slowly pushed in over the course of several minutes, this device saves staff time and reduces errors. Syringe pumps are also useful in microfluidic applications, such as microreactor design and testing, and also in chemistry for slow incorporation of a fixed volume of fluid into a solution. In enzyme kinetics syringe drivers can be used to observe rapid kinetics as part of a stopped flow apparatus. ref cite book author Fersht, Alan title Enzyme structure and mechanism publisher W.H. The Tubex Syringe cartridge was developed about 1943 during World War II by the Wyeth company. It is a drug pre filled glass cartridge syringe with attached sterile needle, which is inserted in a reusable stainless steel holder now plastic . The needle protector is removed and is ready for immediate injection in the administration of a drug. Its development followed the use of several other immediate use products, such as the Syrette , a flexible tube, not unlike an ophthalmic ointment tube designed to hold a needle. The Syrette was developed by Bristol Myers Squibb Squibb and was used for immediate use of morphine on the battle front however it fell into disuse because of leakage and sterility problems. Another product called the Ampin proved problematic as well. The Tubex system was widely used after World War II and expanded as a system of distributing and administration a large variety of drugs from antibiotic s to vaccine s in a pre filled glass cartridge syringe with attached sterile needle. It aided in a standardization of an immediate use sterile dosage forms. It was a time saver for nursing administration time, nurses no longer had to draw up an injection . The product was all ready manufactured for immediate use. It was conducive to inventory control and accountability for narcotic substances in a tamper proof packing. It was widely used by doctors, nurses and pharmacist s for the administration of drugs. Although a few products are still manufactured in Tubex, the Wyeth company has discontinued the entire line of products and has licensed its use to other companies. The carpuject Hospira has now replaced the tubex as the sole competitor in this unitized syringe medication delivery system. ref cite book last Sterile Dosage Forms first authorlink coauthors Salvatore Turco, M.S., PharmD and Robert E King, Ph.D. title Sterile Dosage Forms, Their Preparation and Clinical Application publisher Lea & Febiger date 1987 location Philadelphia pages 267 269 url doi id ... more details

Unreferenced date March 2008 A dry enema is an alternative technique for cleansing the human rectum either for reasons of health, or for sexual hygiene. It is accomplished by squirting a small amount of sterile lubricant into the rectum, resulting in a bowel movement more quickly and with less violence than can be achieved by an oral laxative . It is called dry by contrast to the more usual enema wet enema , because no water is used. A rudimentary form of dry enema is the use of a non medicated glycerin suppository . However, due to the relative hardiness of the suppository necessary for its insertion into the human body before the glycerin can act, it must be melted by the heat of the body, and hence it does not take effect for up to an hour. Often the hygroscopic glycerin irritates the sensitive membranes of the rectum resulting in forceful expulsion of the suppository without any laxative effects. Image Syringe.jpg thumb 329px A disposable syringe A quicker form of the dry enema utilizes the Injection medicine injection of a small amount of water based lubricant such as KY Jelly K Y into the rectum via a non hypodermic syringe , such as an oral syringe, or from some other source. Then again since the glycerin itself is an effective producer of the desired contraction of the colonic muscles it is simpler and more easily controlled to introduce 5 10 cc of glycerin into directly into the rectum. Specialist syringes are available for this purpose but are hard to find. An alternative is to use an enema nozzle which has an intake end which is compatible with a standard hypodermic syringe. This allows the immediate injection of the 5 10 ccs. required, and results can be expected in 2 4 minutes. Another alternative is to use a normal 5 or 10cc syringe inserted directly into the anus. This needs to be done carefully to avoid scratching the anal passage. The passage should be lubricated with sorbolene cream or any water based lubricant. The carpuject is a syringe device for the administration of injectable fluid medication. It is designed with a luer lock device to accept a sterile hypodermic needle or to be linked directly to intravenous tubing line. The product can deliver an intravenous or intramuscular inject by means of a special holder which attaches to the barrel and plunger the attaches to the barrel plug. Medication is prefilled into the syringe barrel. When the plug at the end of the barrel is advanced to the head of the barrel it discharges and releases the contents through the needle or into the lumen of the tubing.
