Tandem gait is a gait method of walking or running where the toes of the back foot touch the heel of the front foot at each step. Neurologist s sometimes ask patients to walk in a straight line using tandem gait as a test to help diagnose ataxia , especially truncal ataxia , because sufferers of these disorders will have an unsteady gait. However, the results are not definitive, because many disorders or problems can cause unsteady gait such as vision difficulties and problems with the motor neurons or associative Cerebellar cortex cortex . Therefore, inability to walk correctly in tandem gait does not prove the presence of ataxia. Tandem selection is a method of artificial selection in which useful traits are selected for sequentially. For instance, one could select for both increased milk Crop yield yield and increased milk fat content in cow s via tandem selection by first selecting those with the best of one trait, say those that produce highest milk yield, and then when that trait is at a satisfactory level, by starting to select for those cows that produce milk with the greatest milk fat content instead. However, for cows to produce milk with greater fat content, yield may have to go down due to, perhaps, limits of the cows metabolism . So, while you are selecting for cows which have increased milk fat content, the yield of milk they are producing may also go down, thus reversing the selection process previously performed to increase it. Therefore, tandem selection has a major disadvantage to other major types of artificial selection for multiple traits, such as culling and index selection , as there is a tendency for the last trait to be lost as the next is being selected. A tandem charge weapon is an explosive device or projectile that has two or more stages of detonation. It is effective against cage armor , which is designed to protect an armored vehicle mostly tanks against Anti tank warfare anti tank munitions. ref http www.defenseindustrydaily.com baes lrod cage armor 03473 BAE s Lrod Cage Armor Defense Industry Daily Bot generated title ref The first stage of the weapon triggers the reactive armor of the target, limiting the attack s effectiveness. However, after the reactive armor has protected the vehicle from the primary attack, it is no longer reactive in that location since reactive armour is primarily a one time defense solution and the location is left more vulnerable. The second detonation from the same projectile which defines it as a tandem charge attacks the same location as the first detonation where the reactive armor has been compromised. Since the regular armor plating is often the only defense remaining, the tandem charge second detonation has an increased likelihood of penetrating the armor. However, tandem charges are useful only against SLERA self limiting explosive reactive armor types of reactive armor, not against the Reactive armour Non explosive and non energetic reactive armour NERA non energetic reactive armor and Reactive armour Non explosive and non energetic reactive armour NxRA non explosive reactive armor reactive armor types, since their inner liner is not explosive itself, thus able to withstand the small forward warhead of tandem charge attack. The PG 7VR warhead for the RPG 7 rocket launcher and the more modern RPG 29 rocket are examples of tandem charges. orphan date February 2009 Tandem signaling is one of the most difficult conditions for speech coders to perform well in is the case where a digital speech coded signal is transmitted from the mobile to the base station, and then demodulated into an analog signal which is then speech coded for retransmission as a digital signal over a land line or wireless link. This situation, called tandem signaling, tends to exaggerate the bit errors originally received at the base station. Tandem signaling is difficult to protect against, but is an important evaluation criterion in the evaluation of speech coders. As wireless systems proliferate, there will be a greater demand for mobile to mobile communications, and such links will, by definition, involve at least two independent, noisy tandems. Tandeming examples and issues If two individuals are using mobile phones on two different networks, and one attempts to call the other, tandeming will occur. This is even more evident, in terms of speech intelligibility, when one user is using a phone with a different audio codec than the other user. If one user has a high bitrate audio codec, and the other uses has a low bitrate, the user with the high bitrate will be able to hear the user with the low bitrate, as the tandeming will not have enough of an opportunity to make the speech completely unintelligible. If two users are on two different mobile phone networks, with different audio codecs such as AMR Narrowband and EVRC falling back to the lowest possible birate on each end 4.75, 6 kbit s , then the speech will suffer from problems. Tandeming is nearly impossible to avoid, because even if all mobile phones used one audio codec, there is the issue of packet retransmission and re encoding. The ServerNet architecture specification defines a connection between nodes, either Central processing unit processor or high performance input output I O nodes such as storage devices. Tandem Computers developed the original ServerNet architecture and protocols for use in its own proprietary computer systems starting in 1992, and released the first ServerNet systems in 1995. Early attempts to license the technology and interface chips to other companies failed, due in part to a disconnect between the culture of selling complete hardware software middleware computer systems and that needed for selling and supporting chips and licensing technology. A follow on development effort ported the Virtual Interface Architecture to ServerNet with PCI interface boards connecting personal computers. Infiniband directly inherited many ServerNet features. After 25 years, systems still ship today based on the ServerNet architecture. References W. E. Baker, et al., A Flexible ServerNet based Fault Tolerant Architecture, in Proc. 25th Int. Symp.
