  1. Task lighting

Often task lighting refers to office lighting, where the task light is used to increase illuminance on the reading area. However, the illuminance level is not the only factor governing visibility. Contrast vision Contrast is also important, and a poorly positioned light source may cause contrast reduction, resulting in loss of visibility. Therefore, it can be argued that the most important purpose of task lighting in the office is not increasing illuminance, but improving contrast. Different strategies for office task lighting exist. The three main approaches are Localised average lighting, where a lamp supplies both ambient light and task light Freely adjustable task light Asymmetric task light, where the lamp is placed at the side of the work area There are also other approaches to office task lighting, for example under shelf luminaire s. Other instances of task lighting are in machinery, where a specific work area needs illumination, and in workshops, where a task light may illuminate the actual working area. Special instances of task lighting are examination and operation lights for medicine and surgery , as well as the dentist s lamp. The actual task may range from very small up to about as far as you may reach with your hands or available tools. Lighting of larger areas is beyond the scope of task lighting. Office task lighting Localised average lighting Localized lighting consists of a luminaire that provides ambient light as well as task light. Often it is an uplighter with a light source that is directed downward. It is intended to be mounted immediately over the workplace, and it can be either hung from the ceiling, mounted on the desk or a dividing wall, or it can be a free standing floor lamp. 1. Adam's Task

Unreferenced date March 2007 Adam s Task Calling Animals by Name by philosopher, poet, and animal trainer Vicki Hearne describes an innovative and metaphysical approach to training animals. Based on studies of literary criticism, philosophy, and extensive hands on experience in training, Hearne asserts that animals specifically those that commonly cohabit or interact with humans are far more intelligent than most people assume. In fact, they are capable of developing an understanding of the good, a moral code that influences their motives and actions. In response to her studies and experiments, Hearne developed an entirely new system of animal training that contradicts modern animal behavioral research and yet, she insists through many examples, is astonishingly effective. Adam s Task was Hearne s first and probably best known book, though she authored several other successful titles, including Animal Happiness and Bandit . The focus of Adam s Task is on the complexities of human animal communication and the importance of seeing domestic animals as they truly are not as anthropomorphized creatures whom we see however we wish to see them. Some of the training methods described in the book have drawn criticism from various factions of animal activists, but Hearne stresses that she is striving for intellectual and moral integrity in all of her studies, and many agree that her obvious love for animals speaks in her defense. The Boston Globe calls Adam s Task A beautiful, wonderful book of the sort that permanently refreshes thought and feeling. The New York Times says When Ms. Hearne relates a dog or horse story, the animals become full fledged characters, as brightly delineated as people created by Dickens or Twain. Adam s Task was first published by Knopf in 1986. It is now available from Skyhorse Publishing with a new introduction by Donald McCaig . 1. Task System

Orphan date February 2009 The task system is a reference within slavery to a division of labor established on the plantation . It is the less brutal of the two main types of labor systems. The other form, known as the gang system , was harsher. ref Judith Carney, Black Rice, Cambridge Harvard University Press, 2001 98 101 ref The difference between the task labor system and the gang labor system was characterized by the amount of work time required by the slave and also the amount of freedom given to the slave. Some plantation owners allowed their slaves to produce goods for sale in task systems. The gang systems forced the slaves to work until the owner said they were finished and allowed them almost no freedom. ref Black Rice 99 ref Early rice task system Evidence suggests that the task system was gender oriented. The women laborers were the predominant work force for rice cultivations within the task system of the Southeastern United States . This was a cultural influence that transferred directly from West African cultures. ref Judith Carney, Black Rice , Cambridge Harvard University Press, 2001 108 ref The task system was an offshoot of the division of labor that was already in place in the African tribal systems before the Atlantic slave trade brought the slaves over to the American colonies . It marked an assemblage or melting pot of skills and abilities from traditional rice cultivation. The slaves used this knowledge to bargain with the plantation owners to gain more control over their work. It gave the plantation owners a greater knowledge of this new and non indigenous form of farming. ref Judith Carney, Black Rice , Cambridge Harvard University Press, 2001 78 106 ref Planters knew that slaves grew rice they also know which ethnic groups specialized in its cultivation. This knowledge came from their sustained contact with slaves in shaping the Carolina frontier and growing food staples for mutual survival. ref Black Rice 89 ref The highly developed and knowledgeable ...   more details
