Mexican conifers extend mainly in the main mountain ranges Sierra Madre Oriental , Sierra Madre Occidental and the neo volcanic axis, enclosed between these mountains there are disperse groups of conifers in mid and high elevations valleys when rainfalls conditions allow its growth. Mexican conifers grow in some places associated with oaks. The dry season is about 7 8 months. Most of rainfalls 80 95 occur from June to October 5 months and only four months in the north. Precipitations throughout the year are present only in a little portion of the Sierra Madre Oriental in the State of Veracruz . The Taxodiaceae were at one time regarded as a distinct Family biology plant family comprising the following ten genera of conifer ous tree s Athrotaxis Cryptomeria Cunninghamia Cunninghamites Glyptostrobus Metasequoia Sciadopitys Sequoia genus Sequoia Sequoiadendron Taiwania Taxodium However, recent research has shown that the Taxodiaceae, with the single exception of Sciadopitys , should be merged into the family Cupressaceae . There are no consistent characters by which they can be separated, and genetic evidence demonstrates close relationships this merging is now becoming widely accepted. The one exception, the genus Sciadopitys , is genetically very distinct from all other conifers, and now treated in a family of its own, Sciadopitys Sciadopityaceae . It is also referred as a local park for the citizens of Craiova and a tourist destination in town. History The Botanical Garden of Craiova was founded in 1952 at the initiative and under the guidance of prof. Alexandru Buia 1911 1964 . All started when on August 29, 1952 the park November 7 Fountain Jianu the ground was assigned to the Agronomic Institute of Craiova today part of the University of Craiova in order to start the creation of the future Botanical Garden. The initial goal was to provide the students of the Faculty of profile agronomy and horticulture with training material as needed, especially for the newly created Agronomic Institute of Craiova 1948 . Beside the broadening of the scientific base for the researchers and teachers, it also aimed to allow visitors to get in contact with the high variability of the plant world. On March 13, 2002, the College Senate of University of Craiova endorsed the decision to name the Botanical Garden Alexandru Buia as token of appreciation to prof.
