  1. Grey atmosphere

Technical date December 2009 Grey atmosphere is a useful set of approximations made for radiative transfer applications. The application of the grey atmosphere approximation is the primary method astronomers use to determine the temperature and basic radiative properties of astronomical objects including the sun, planets with atmospheres, other stars, and interstellar clouds of gas and dust. The primary approximation is assumption that the absorption coefficient, typically represented by an , has no wavelength or frequency dependence for the frequency range being worked in. Typically a number of other assumptions are made simultaneously 1 the atmosphere has a plane parallel plane parallel atmosphere geometry and 2 the atmosphere is in a thermal radiative equilibrium. This set of assumptions leads directly to the mean radiance intensity and source function being directly equivalent to a blackbody Planck function of the temperature at that optical depth . 1. Controlled atmosphere

A controlled atmosphere is an Agriculture agricultural storage method. An atmosphere in which oxygen , carbon dioxide and nitrogen concentrations as well as temperature and humidity are regulated. Two major classes of commodity can be stored in controlled atmosphere Dry commodities such as Cereal grains , legumes and oilseed . In these commodities the primary aim of the atmosphere is usually to control insect pests. Most insects cannot exist indefinitely without oxygen or in conditions of raised greater than approximately 30 carbon dioxide. Controlled atmosphere treatments of grains can be a fairly slow process taking up to several weeks at lower temperatures less than 15 C . A typical schedule for complete disinfestation of dry grain 13 moisture content at about 25 C, with carbon dioxide, is a concentration above 35 v v carbon dioxide in air for at least 15 days. ref Annis, P.C. and Morton, R. 1997.The acute mortality effects of carbon dioxide on various life stages of Sitophilus oryzae. Orphan date November 2009 Yo, what temperature is Jupiter? A primary atmosphere is an atmosphere of a planet that forms by accretion of gas eous matter from the accretion disc of the planet s star sun . Planets such as Jupiter and Saturn have primary atmospheres. Primary atmospheres are very thick compared to secondary atmosphere s like the one found on Earth . 1. Reducing atmosphere

refimprove date May 2009 A reducing atmosphere , also known as a reduction atmosphere , is an atmosphere atmospheric condition in which oxidation is prevented by removal of oxygen and other oxidising gases or vapours, and which may contain actively reducing gases such as hydrogen , carbon monoxide and gases that would oxidize in the presence of oxygen, such as hydrogen sulfide . Materials processing In metal processing, a reducing atmosphere is used in annealing metallurgy annealing ovens for relaxation of metal stress mechanics stresses without corroding the metal. An inert gas, usually nitrogen is used, or for more extreme conditions, hydrogen gas. A reducing atmosphere is also used in order to produce specific effects on ceramic wares being fired. A redox reduction atmosphere is produced in a fuel fired kiln by reducing the draft and depriving the kiln of oxygen . This reduced level of oxygen causes incomplete combustion of the fuel and raises the level of carbon inside the kiln. At high temperatures the carbon will bond with and remove the oxygen in the metal oxides used as colorants in the glazes. This loss of oxygen results in a change in the color of the glazes because it allows the metals in the glaze to be seen in an unoxidized form. A reduction atmosphere can also affect the color of the clay body. If iron is present in the clay body, as it is in most stoneware , then it will be affected by the reduction atmosphere as well. 1. Ionic atmosphere

Orphan date January 2011 unreferenced date June 2009 Ionic Atmosphere is a concept employed in Debye H ckel theory which explains the conductivity behaviour of electrolytic solutions. It can be generally defined as the area at which a charged entity is capable of attracting an entity of the opposite charge. Asymmetry, or Relaxation effect If an electrical potential is applied to an electrolytic solution, a positive ion will move towards the negative electrode and drag along an entourage of negative ions with it. The more concentrated the solution, the closer these negative ions are to the positive ion and thus the greater the resistance experienced by the positive ion. This influence on the speed of an ion is known as the Asymmetry effect because the ionic atmosphere moving around the ion is not symmetrical the charge density behind is greater than in the front, slowing the motion of the ion. Electrophoretic effect This is another factor which slows the motion of ion s within a solution. It is the tendency of the applied potential to move the ionic atmosphere itself. This drags the solvent molecules along because of the attractive forces between ions and solvent molecules. As a result, the central ion at the centre of the ionic atmosphere is influenced to move towards the pole opposite its ionic atmosphere. This inclination retards its motion. 1. Subsidence (atmosphere)

Unreferenced date October 2007 for subsidence of the ground subsidence Subsidence in the Earth s atmosphere is most commonly caused by low temperatures as air cools, it becomes denser and moves towards the ground, just as warm air becomes less dense and moves upwards. Subsidence generally causes high barometric pressure as more air moves into the same space the polar high s are areas of almost constant subsidence, as are the horse latitudes , and these areas of subsidence are the sources of much of the world s prevailing wind . Subsidence also causes many smaller scale weather phenomena, such as morning fog. An extreme form of subsidence is a downburst , which can result in damage similar to that produced by a tornado. File CottrellAtmosphere.png thumbnail right A carbon atom below a dislocation in iron, forming a Cottrell atmosphere Cottrell atmospheres occur in body centered cubic BCC materials, such as iron or nickel, with small impurity atoms, such as carbon or nitrogen. As these interstitial atoms distort the lattice slightly, there will be an associated residual stress field surrounding the interstitial. This Stress physics stress field can be relaxed by the interstitial element interstitial atom diffusing towards a dislocation, which contains a small gap at its core as it is a more open structure , see Figure 1. Once the atom has diffused into the dislocation core the atom will stay. Typically only one interstitial atom is required per lattice plane of the dislocation. Once a dislocation has become pinned, a small extra force is required to unpin the dislocation prior the yielding, producing an observed upper yield point in a Stress strain curve stress strain graph. After unpinning, dislocations are free to move in the crystal, which results in a subsequent lower yield point, and the material will deform in a more plastic manner. Leaving the sample to age, by holding it at room temperature for a few hours, enables the carbon atoms to rediffuse back to dislocation cores, resulting in a return of the upper yield point. Cottrell atmospheres lead to formation of L der band s and large forces for deep drawing and forming large sheets, making them a hindrance to manufacture. Some steels are designed to remove the Cottrell atmosphere ...   more details
