  1. Tehuantepec Ridge

The Tehuantepec Ridge is a linear undersea ridge located off the west coast of Mexico in the Pacific Ocean . It is the remnant of an old fracture zone , and not a tectonic spreading center ridge see Mid Ocean Ridge . It extends from the eastern end of the Clipperton Fracture Zone northeastward toward Mexico until it is subducted into the Middle America Trench . It lies within the tectonic Cocos Plate , separating the lower and older seafloor of the Guatemala Basin which lies southeast of the ridge from higher and younger seafloor which lies to its northwest. Current research indicates that the ridge was formed as a fracture zone and transform fault along the East Pacific Rise . As a result of a change in the motion of the Pacific Plate about 13 million years ago, there was also a change in the orientation of the East Pacific Rise, which in turn reoriented the fracture zone, creating the current alignment that is today s Clipperton Fracture Zone. The Tehuantepec Ridge preserves the previous orientation. Some researchers have hypothesized that the subducted portion of the Tehuantepec Ridge under Mexico is responsible for the existence of the El Chich n volcano as well as the other volcanoes of what is called the Chiapanecan Volcanic Arc. Studies of the 1982 eruption of El Chich n indicated its erupted output was unusual compared to other volcanoes in the Trans Mexican Volcanic Belt which lies well to the northwest. The anomaly is thought to result from the distinctive composition of the rocks which comprise the Tehuantepec Ridge. ref Vlad C. 1. Tehuantepecer

Tehuantepecer is a violent mountain gap wind traveling along Chivela Pass . It originates in the Bay of Campeche as a northerly wind which crosses the isthmus and blows through the gap between the Mexican and Guatemalan mountains. The synoptic condition is associated with high forming in Sierra Madre de Oaxaca Sierra Madre . The wind reaches 20 40kt and on occasions 100kt. The outflow may form rope cloud over the Gulf of Tehuantepec . These winds can be observed on satellite pictures such as scatterometer winds measurements, they influence waves, propagating as swell and sometimes observed 1000 miles away e.g., in Galapagos Islands . These strong winds bring cooler sub surface waters and may last 4 7 days. References Steenburgh, W. J., D. M. Schultz, B. A. 1. Tehuano wind

The Tehuano wind is a north to northeasterly wind which periodically blows across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico . The wind is stronger than the trade wind s which normally blow here. Citation needed date September 2009 It is notable for causing a pronounced increase in upwelling of cooler, nutrient rich waters in the Gulf of Tehuantepec on the Pacific coast which in turn supports an abundance of sea life. The wind and upwelling are together referred to as a Tehuano event . The Tehuano is caused by a surge of cooler, drier air originating from the North American continent. Such surges are more common in the winter, but may occur at other times of the year as well. This air is denser than the tropical air mass normally present in the region, thus a strong pressure gradient is established which induces the wind. The wind is further accelerated by the funneling effect of the Chivela Pass between the Bay of Campeche and the Pacific coastlines. ref name bourassa cite web url http coaps.fsu.edu bourassa pubs tpec HW tpec HW.shtml title Non Inertial Flow in NSCAT Observations of Tehuantepec Winds accessdate 2011 03 26 ref The same conditions are the cause of the Papagayo wind off the coast of Costa Rica and the Panama wind further south. 1. American-Hawaiian Steamship Company

The American Hawaiian Steamship Company was founded in 1899 to carry cargos of sugar from Hawaii to the United States and manufactured goods on return trips. Brothers in law George Dearborn and Lewis Henry Lapham were the key players in founding the company. At the time of the company s founding, its steamships sailed around South America via the Straits of Magellan to reach East Coast of the United States East Coast ports. By 1907 the company began using the Tehuantepec Route. Shipments on the Tehuantepec Route would arrive at Mexico Mexican ports Salina Cruz Salina Cruz, Oaxaca , for eastbound cargo, and Coatzacoalcos , Veracruz for westbound cargo and would traverse the Isthmus of Tehuantepec on the Tehuantepec National Railway . When American political troubles with Mexico closed that route, American Hawaiian returned to the Straits of Magellan route. When the Panama Canal opened for traffic in August 1914, American Hawaiian began routing all of its ships via this route. The temporary closure of the canal because of a series of landslides forced the company to return to the Straits of Magellan route for the third time in its history. In World War I , twelve of the company s ships were ship commissioning commissioned into the United States Navy a further five were sunk by submarines or mines during the conflict. Roger Dearborn Lapham , a future mayor of San Francisco, California , served as company president in the mid 1920s. In World War II , the company operated many Liberty ship s and Victory ship s under the War Shipping Administration , including the SS Daniel Boone Daniel Boone , the John Milledge , the John Drake Sloat , the Benjamin Goodhue and the Chanute Victory .
