  1. Teleconnection

technical date October 2011 context date October 2011 Teleconnection in atmospheric science refers to climate anomalies being related to each other at large distances typically thousands of kilometers . The most emblematic teleconnection is that linking sea level pressure at Tahiti and Darwin, Australia , which defines the Southern Oscillation . History Teleconnections were first noted by the British meteorologist Sir Gilbert Walker in the late 19th century, through computation of the correlation between time series of atmospheric pressure , temperature and rainfall. They served as a building block for the understanding of climate variability, by showing that the latter was not purely random . Indeed, the term El Ni o Southern Oscillation ENSO is an implicit acknowledgment that the phenomenon underlies variability in several locations at once. It was later noticed that associated teleconnections occurred all over North America, as embodied by the Pacific North American teleconnection pattern . In the 1980s, improved observations allowed to detect teleconnections at larger distances throughout the troposphere . ref Wallace, J.M., and D.S. 1. Pacific-North American teleconnection pattern

The Pacific North American teleconnection pattern PNA is a climate climatological term for a large scale weather pattern with two modes, denoted positive and negative, and which relates the atmosphere atmospheric circulation pattern over the North Pacific Ocean with the one over the North America n continent. The positive phase of the PNA pattern features above average barometric pressure heights in the vicinity of Hawaii and over the intermountain region of North America , and below average heights located south of the Aleutian Islands and over the southeastern United States . The PNA pattern is associated with strong fluctuations in the strength and location of the East Asian jet stream. The positive phase is associated with an enhanced East Asian jet stream and with an eastward shift in the jet exit region toward the western United States. The negative phase is associated with a westward retraction of that jet stream toward eastern Asia, blocking activity over the high latitudes of the North pacific, and a strong split flow configuration over the central North Pacific. The positive phase of the PNA pattern is associated with above average temperatures over western Canada and the extreme western United States, and below average temperatures across the south central and southeastern U.S. The PNA tends to have little impact on surface temperature variability over North America during summer. The associated precipitation anomalies include above average totals in the Gulf of Alaska extending into the Pacific Northwestern United States, and below average totals over the upper Midwestern United States. The negative PNA phase is associated with the opposite. Although the PNA pattern is a natural internal mode of climate variability, it is also strongly influenced by the El Ni o Southern Oscillation ENSO phenomenon. The positive phase of the PNA pattern tends to be associated ... episodes La Ni a . See also Teleconnection Arctic dipole anomaly Arctic oscillation El Ni o Southern ...   more details

for the deceased Russian hockey player by the nickname Siberian Express Alexei Cherepanov Siberian Express is a shorthand meteorological term in the United States describing the arrival of an extremely cold air mass of Arctic origins. It does not necessarily refer to an origin in Siberia . The term is most commonly employed by the news media when such a frigid air mass moves into areas where it is relatively unusual, such as the Deep South or East Coast of the United States Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Meteorologically, it is typically associated with a phenomenon called the Pacific North American teleconnection pattern PNA .
