  1. Melvyl

Melvyl is the name of the Online Public Access Catalog online catalog of the University of California s library system, and is a registered trademark owned by the University of California UC . Melvyl contains catalog records from all ten UC campuses, as well as the two UC Library storage facilities, the Southern Regional Library Facility SRLF and the Northern Regional Library Facility NRLF , as well as the California State Library , Hastings College of the Law , the California Academy of Sciences , the California Historical Society , the Center for Research Libraries , the Graduate Theological Union , and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory . The database contains over 30 million records. Melvyl is named after Melvil Dewey , the library pioneer who invented the Dewey Decimal System . The Melvyl System is produced by the California Digital Library &mdash an academic initiative of the UC Office of the President in downtown Oakland, California . History Melvyl began as a Library Automation System in 1977. Merging MARC standards MARC records from the UC campuses into a union catalog was first done in a Microfiche format. Online access began in 1980 as a prototype for library staff. In 1981, library patrons were able to access an online electronic catalog of UC library books using a computer terminal . At one point, the Division of Library Automation maintained their own computer network that connected all the UC campuses, including some satellite links. Melvyl ran on a mainframe computer , and the UC Division of Library Automation did development work to implement TCP IP in order to provide telnet access. A world wide web version was also developed. The mainframe system, retired in 2003, was replaced using commercial software from the Integrated library system vendor Ex Libris. A legacy telnet mode retired in 2007. The Ex Libris version was retired in June 2011 and Melvyl is now supported by OCLC s WorldCat Local platform. External links http melvyl.worldcat.org M ...   more details

  1. TCPware

Orphan date February 2009 TCPware is a third party layered product published by Process Software LLC to add TCP IP capabilities to OpenVMS . The need for such a product may seem obvious today but back in the early 1990s Digital Equipment Corporation who published VMS as it was known at the time had an internal policy favoring their own product called DECnet . Meanwhile, many VMS users in governments, large corporations and universities were discovering the TCP IP based internet and required third party software enable connectivity to it. Today, HP s TCPIP Services for OpenVMS is putting pressure on products like TCPware. One reason why TCPware hasn t faded into oblivion is due to two TCPware API s called the Telnet Library and the FTP Library . These modules allow a relatively inexperienced programmer to use a high level language to write software which will connect across the internet and do useful work. Also, quite a bit of legacy software now relies on these modules with no good reason to rewite them at the lower packet library level. Side Notes In the early 1990s Digital Equipment Corporation DEC produced their own flavor of UNIX called ULTRIX which supported TCP IP. Almost as a skunk works project, they produced a layered product for VMS called UCX Ultrix Communications Extensions which later evolved into TCPIP Services for OpenVMS . TCPware s Telnet Library can be used for other protocol transfers like HTTP and SMTP to only name two. 1. Daisy chain (information technology)

Other uses Daisy chain disambiguation Daisy chain Multiple issues intro tooshort April 2009 unreferenced February 2008 Daisy chain is a term used variously in information technology . Its meaning differs according to technology domain, although each preserves the traditional meaning of connecting like items to each other in a series or chain. Computer software A daisy chain software installation computer programs installation can continue in piecemeal fashion. This is of particular use with downloaded software. If the connection to the download server is lost during the installation process, daisy chaining allows installation to restart from where it stopped. Google Pack provides this capability. Computer hardware Some hardware can be attached to a computing system in a daisy chain configuration by connecting each component to another similar component, rather than directly to the computing system that uses the component. Only the last component in the chain directly connects to the computing system. For example chaining multiple components that each have a UART port to each other. The components must also behave cooperatively. e.g., only one seizes the communications bus at a time. SCSI and Firewire devices can also be daisy chained. Network topology main Network topology Daisy chain System access Users can daisy chain computing sessions together. Using services such as telnet or Secure Shell SSH , the user creates a session on a second computer via telnet, and from the second session, telnets to a third and so on. Another typical example is the terminal session inside a terminal session using Remote Desktop Protocol RDP . Reasons to create daisy chains include connecting to a system on a non routed network via a gateway system, preserving sessions on the initial computer while working on a second computer, to save bandwidth or improve connectivity on an unstable network by first connecting to a better connected machine. A less wholesome purpose is camouflaging act ...   more details

  1. Serial over LAN

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Serial Over LAN is a mechanism that enables the input and output of the serial port of a managed system to be redirected over Internet Protocol IP . On some managed systems, notably blade server systems, the serial ports on the managed computers are not normally connected to a traditional serial port socket. To allow users to access applications on these computers via the serial port, the input output of the serial port is redirected to the network. For example a user wishing to access a blade server via the serial port can telnet to a network address and log in. On the blade server the login will be seen as coming through the serial port.
