Begun in 1460 according to the designs of Leon Battista Alberti , it was left partially completed in the mid 1470s, by which time construction had slowed and was no longer being directed by Alberti. As a consequence, little remains of Alberti s work apart from the plan, which is considered one of the earliest and most significant examples of Renaissance centrally planned churches. The plan is in the shape of a Greek cross , with three identical arms centring apse s, under a central cross vaulted space without any interior partitions. It portrays the condottiero and lord of Rimini and Fano Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta , and is housed in the Mus e du Louvre of Paris. The portrait depicts the condottiero by profile and, according to some sources, was based on a medal executed in 1445 by Pisanello , or to one by Matteo de Pasti from 1450. The picture itself was executed by Piero della Francesca during his sojourn in Rimini, during which he also painted the fresco with Sigismondo Pandolfo kneeling after St. Sigismund in the Tempio Malatestiano Cathedral of the city. Despite the choice of the profile representation, typical of the portraits of eminent figures of the type, Piero della Francesca showed his attention for naturalist details in the fine execution of the texture and the hair of the committent. This is a proof of his good knowledge of Flemish masters such as Rogier van der Weyden . Agostino di Duccio 1418 &ndash c. 1481 was an Italians Italian early Renaissance sculptor. Born in Florence , he worked in Prato with Donatello and Michelozzo , who influenced him greatly. In 1441, he was accused of stealing precious materials from a monastery in Florence and was banished from his native city as a result. The following year he continued the work on the altar of S.  Geminiano for the Cathedral of Modena , a work noticeable for the influence of Michelozzo. In 1446, he studied late Gothic sculpture in Venice and met Matteo de Pasti who called on him to execute the sculptural decoration of the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini , where he stayed from 1449 and 1457. The decorations were supposed to be a sort of mediaeval encyclopedia, with reliefs of zodiacal and other allegorical and mythological figures. Between 1457 and 1462 he created the marble fa ade of the church of S.  Bernardino at Perugia and the following years until 1470 he created many works especially in Florence , such as a Madonna d Auvillers for Piero di Cosimo de Medici , now found at the Louvre .
