  1. Expression templates

Expression templates is a C template metaprogramming technique in which Generic programming templates are used to represent part of an expression. Typically, the template itself represents a particular type of operation, while the parameters represent the operands to which the operation applies. ref name TMP02 cite book last1 Vandevoorde first1 David last2 Josuttis first2 Nicolai title C Templates The Complete Guide publisher Addison Wesley year 2002 isbn 0 201 73484 2 ref The expression template can then be Lazy evaluation evaluated at a later time, or passed to a function. The technique was proposed by Todd Veldhuizen in his June 1995 article in the C Report . ref name TV95 cite web last Veldhuizen first Todd title Expression Templates date June 1995 url http www10.informatik.uni erlangen.de pflaum pflaum ProSeminar exprtmpl.html accessdate 2009 01 09 ref For example, consider a library representing Array data structure vectors with a class code Vec code . It is natural to want to overload code operator code and code operator code so you could write code Vec x alpha u v code where code alpha code is a scalar and code u code and code v code are code Vec code s. A naive implementation would have code operator code and code operator code return code Vec code s. However, then the above expression would mean creating a temporary for code u v code then another temporary for code alpha code times that first temporary, then assigning that to code x code . Expression templates delay evaluation so the expression code Vec x alpha u v code essentially generates at compile time a new code Vec code constructor taking a scalar and two code Vec code s as follows using the curiously recurring template pattern as is used by Boost.uBLAS source lang cpp include vector include cassert template typename E A CRTP base class for Vecs with a size and indexing class VecExpression public typedef ... 1. Distinguishable interfaces

Distinguishable interfaces use computer graphic principles to automatically generate easily distinguishable appearance for computer data. Although the desktop metaphor revolutionized user interfaces, there is evidence that a spatial layout alone does little to help in locating files and other data distinguishable appearance is also required. Studies have shown that average users have considerable difficulty finding files on their personal computers, even ones that they created the same day. ref Citation last Barreau first D., coauthors Nardi, B. title Finding and reminding file organization from the desktop journal SIGCHI Bulletin volume 27 number 3 pages 647 656 year 1995 ref Search engines do not always help, since it has been found that users often know of the existence of a file without being able to specify relevant search terms. On the contrary, people appear to incrementally search for files using some form of context. ref Citation last Teevan first James, coauthors Alvarado, C. and Ackerman, M. and Karger, D. title The Perfect Search Engine Is Not Enough A Study of Orienteering Behavior in Directed Search journal CHI conference year 2004 ref Recently researchers and web developers have argued that the problem is the lack of distinguishable appearance in the traditional computer interface most objects and locations appear identical. This problem rarely occurs in the real world, where both objects and locations generally have easily distinguishable appearance. Discriminability was one of the recommendations in the ISO 9241 12 recommendation on presentation of information on visual displays part of the overall report on ISO 9241 Ergonomics of Human System Interaction , however it was assumed in that report that this would be achieved by manual design of graphical symbols. 1. Concept (generic programming)

In generic programming , a concept is a description of supported operations on a type, including syntax and semantics. In this way, concepts are related to abstract base class es but concepts do not require a subtype relationship. Languages using The term was in use as early as 1998 for Standard Template Library STL ref Austern, M.H. Generic programming and the STL using and extending the C Standard Template Library . 1998. pp 17 18 ref , as this was one of the first libraries that extensively used templates. Primarily in C 1998 standard , the Concept term was introduced to name just a simple description of the requirements for particular type, usually being a template parameter. It was never encoded in the language explicitly the concept was expressed only by what operations are tried to be performed on objects of that type and what is expected to work that is, to compile correctly . As generics in Java and C have some similarities to C s templates, the role of concepts there is played by interfaces. However there is one important difference between concepts and interfaces when a template parameter is required to implement a particular interface, the matching type can only be a class that implements explicitly that interface. Concepts bring more flexibility because they can be satisfied by two ways explicitly defined as satisfied by using a concept map defined separately to the type itself, unlike interfaces implicitly defined for auto concepts , which can be used also for built in types and other types that were not predestined for this use Another language implementing something very similar to concepts is Haskell programming language Haskell , where the feature is called Type class type classes . Example For example, if a type code I code satisfies the Trivial Iterator concept in C , and code i code is of type code I code , the following are valid expressions with corresponding semantics ref http www.sgi.com tech stl trivial.html Trivial Iterator Bot generated t ...   more details

Wikify date February 2011 Image Roboboard.gif thumb right 400px RoboBOARD FX Graphical BBS Interface 1992 RoboBOARD FX was first introduced by Hamilton TeleGraphics Inc, written by the owner Seth Hamilton in 1992. At a time where BBS Software such as RemoteAccess were merely using ANSI art interfaces RoboBOARD started a revolution. It was the first fully graphical BBS system with iconic navigation, punchy bitmaps, and vector fonts, all at a time when ultra fast high speed modems were barely clocking 2400 bit s. RoboBOARD FX provided a familiar looking graphical user interface for DOS, complete with dragging windows, clicking buttons, scrollbars, pop up dialogue boxes and templates. In this GUI environment RoboBOARD FX supported graphics modes of up to 1024 x 768 in 16 256 SVGA color. One of the biggest improvements RoboBOARD FX brought into the BBS world was it built in photographic capabilities, which allowed a BBS to display images to its users in real time, without requiring a pre download.
