Soil texture is a qualitative classification tool used in both the field and laboratory to determine classes for agricultural soils based on their physical texture. The classes are distinguished in the field by the textural feel which can be further clarified by separating the relative proportions of sand , silt and clay using grading sieves The Particle Size Distribution PSD . The class is then used to determine crop suitability and to approximate the soils responses to environmental and management conditions such as drought or calcium lime requirements. A qualitative rather than a quantitative tool it is a fast, simple and effective means to assess the soils physical characteristics. Although the U.S.D.A. system uses 12 classes whilst the U.K. ADAS uses just 11 the systems are mutually compatible as shown in the combined soil textural triangle below. In chemistry a convergent synthesis is a strategy that aims to improve the efficiency of multi step chemical synthesis , most often in organic synthesis . In linear synthesis the overall chemical yield yield quickly drops with each reaction step A B C D Suppose the yield is 50 for each reaction, the overall yield of D is only 12.5 from A. In a convergent synthesis A B 50 C D 50 B D E 25 the overall yield of E 25 looks much better. In chemistry a divergent synthesis is a strategy with the aim to improve the efficiency of chemical synthesis . It is often an alternative to convergent synthesis or linear synthesis. In one strategy divergent synthesis aims to generate a library biology library of chemical compound s by first reacting a molecule with a set of reactants. The next generation of compounds is generated by further reactions with each compound in generation 1. This methodology quickly diverges to large numbers of new compounds A generates A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 in generation 1 A1 generates A11, A12, A13 in generation 2 and so on. An entire library of new chemical compounds for instance carbohydrate sugar s can be screened for desirable properties. In another strategy divergent synthesis starts from a molecule as a central core from which successive generations of building blocks are added. A good example is the divergent synthesis of dendrimer s for example where in each generation new monomer reacts to the growing surface of the sphere. Diversity Oriented Synthesis Diversity oriented synthesis or DOS is a strategy for quick access to molecule libraries with an emphasis on skeletal diversity. ref cite journal title A Planning Strategy for Diversity Oriented Synthesis last1 Burke first1 Martin last2 Schreiber first2 Stuart journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition year 2004 volume 43 issue 1 pages 46 doi 10.1002 anie.200300626 pmid 14694470 ref In one such application a Petasis reaction product 1 .... ref Short Synthesis of Skeletally and Stereochemically Diverse Small Molecules by Coupling Petasis ... ref Image DivergentPetasis.png 500px center Short Synthesis of Skeletally and Stereochemically ... links Diversity Oriented Synthesis Journal http versita.com dos Link Divergent synthesis in sugars ... synthesis http www2.chemie.uni erlangen.de services dissonline data dissertation Francesc Camprubi html chapter3 3.html Link References Reflist DEFAULTSORT Divergent Synthesis Category Chemical synthesis ... more details

Unreferenced date April 2009 Intellectual Synthesis is a broad term describing scholarly endeavors meant to unify and fuse a large amount of information into a single integrated body of knowledge. Commonly, intellectual synthesis occurs as an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary academic effort by one or more scholars. Examples of Intellectual Synthesis A good example would be Big history , which is an effort to reexamine human history within the context of the wider history of the universe, applying diverse fields of knowledge to paint a picture which is wider in scope, and relies on much information generally outside of the discipline of history anthropology, systems theory, geology, biology, sociology, cosmology . Intellectual synthesis is most apparent in fields which blur the lines of existing disciplines for example, history has been regarded as a social science , but is dependent upon anthropology, sociology, political science, economics, military theory, climatology, etc., and some such as Jared Diamond have proposed establishing human history as one of the historical sciences . World History is another example as typically historians specialize on particular periods or regions or nations with a new synthesis occurring of the histories of the world s diverse societies being brought together to tell a unified picture of the course of world history. The goal of intellectual synthesis is to bring together all of the related transdisciplinary knowledge into a single, cohesive whole to provide for a more complete and comprehensive understanding and potentially lead to new theories, perspectives, and interpretations. Sinewave synthesis , or sine wave speech , is a technique for speech synthesis synthesizing speech by replacing the formants main bands of energy with pure tone whistles.
