Unreferenced date May 2010 The Arabs in History ISBN 0 192 80310 7 is a book authored by Middle east historian Bernard Lewis , published in 1950. The book was well received by the general public owing in part to its accessibility to non historians. Lewis takes a comprehensive look at the history of the Arab peoples, from pre Islamic times to the modern day. The book has been reprinted several times, the most recent of which being the 2002 edition. Quote Whoever lives in our country, speaks our language, is brought up in our culture and takes pride in our glory is one of us. Thus ran a declaration of modern leaders of Arab states. Other uses History of the Arabs disambiguation History of the Arabs is a book written by Philip Khuri Hitti and was first published in 1937. Hitti spent 10 years writing this book ref http www.saudiaramcoworld.com issue 197104 a.talk.with.philip.hitti.htm A Talk With Philip Hitti ref In 1927, the editor Macmillan Publishers Daniel Macmillan , the brother of Harold Macmillan , wrote to Philip Hitti asking him to write a history of the Arab s. Hitti agreed, estimating that it would take him three years to complete the book, but the task actually took him 10 years. Although its editor originally hesitated to publish a hundred copies of this book, the book has gone through ten published editions since then. In his History of the Arabs , Philip Hitti denies the idea of an Arab army destroyed by Charles Martel , stressing that the caliph had just died and that these Arabs preferred Spain to more northerly areas. For him, it is not the defeat of the Arabs which enabled the possibility of the Western world Occident , as if the Arabs had to be defeated so that the Occident could exist. Instead, it is the transmission of the knowledge of the Mediterranean basin and beyond, and thus the dialogue between the two banks of the Mediterranean, which enabled the foundation of the Occident. Arab people Arabs first established themselves in the Caucasus in the eighth century, during the Muslim conquests Islamic invasion of the Middle East . The process of shrinking of the Caliphate in the tenth century was followed by the establishment of several Arab ruled principalities in the region, chiefly the principality of Shirvan most of present day Azerbaijan and southeast part of Dagestan ruled by the Mazyadid dynasty. As the rulers of Shirvan known as Shirvanshah s spread their control over much of the Southeast Caucasus and at the same time found themselves more and more isolated from the Arab world , they were undergoing gradual Persianization Persianisation . Jackals and Arabs German language German Schakale und Araber is a short story by Franz Kafka , written and published in 1917. The story was first published by Martin Buber in the Germany German monthly Der Jude . It appeared again in a 1919 collection titled A Country Doctor Ein Landarzt . Plot A Europe an traveler from the North, accompanied by Arab guides, is camped in the desert. When night falls, and the Arabs are at a distance, the traveler is accosted by talking golden jackal jackals . The jackals speak of an age old hatred for Arabs, whom they associate with uncleanliness. They relate a belief passed down from their ancestors, that a man such as the protagonist would be the one to end the quarrel which divides the world in two . The jackals attempt to enlist the traveler s assistance in destroying them, offering him old rusted scissors with which to slit the throats of the Arabs. At this moment an Arab happens upon the discussion, and cracks his whip, laughing cheerfully . He declares the fondness of Arabs for jackals, and the Arabs bring out the carcass of a camel that had died in the night. The jackals begin to feast on it uncontrollably, and the Arab whips several of them as they tear at the flesh of the carcass, until the European interferes. The Arab agrees to stop, and the story ends We ll leave them to their calling. Besides, it s time to break camp. You ve seen them. Wonderful creatures, aren t they? And how they hate us Analysis Walter Herbert Sokel describes the role of the European as a Messiah figure to the jackals, observing that the jackals at times refer ....
