Alpha Blitz is a word game designed by Mike Selinker and published by Wizards of the Coast . Alpha Blitz is based on the concept of a letter bank , as players make words using the letter cards on the table as many times as they like e.g., LENS can become SENSELESSNESS . The game contains 98 letter cards and 10 blitzes lightning bolt cards that destroy letters and bring the game toward conclusion. The game is really two games in one Alpha and Blitz . Alpha is the more methodical game, where players take turns replacing one of the letters on the table with one from their hand or destroying a letter with a Blitz, then making the longest word they can. Players score 1 point for making a word, plus 1 point for each letter in the word that is greater than the number of letters on the table. The four red bordered letters J, Qu, X, and Z also score an extra point each time they re used. The game ends when there are only two letter piles left on the table. Blitz is played in rounds, with all players playing simultaneously. Each player is in control of two letter piles. The first player to call out a word gets 1 point plus bonuses for red bordered letters , and then is out of the hand. It was designed by Anton Schwarzkopf . At the end of 1974, it was determined that Great Adventure needed two additional roller coasters and an additional flume ride to accommodate huge crowds. So they purchased compact and inexpensive coasters called Jumbo Jet and Big Fury . Big Fury opened in the spring of 1975 while Jumbo Jet had technical difficulties beyond economic repair. Jumbo Jet may have opened for a day but this is not known for sure. Jumbo Jet was removed a month after it was built by the end of August in 1975. To replace Jumbo Jet, Alpen Blitz was purchased and was built on the site Jumbo Jet was to have occupied. The Alpen Blitz was located in the area later occupied by the Haunted Castle . The bumper cars are in this area today. By 1977, Great Adventure management began to build a steel looping coaster that would be known as Lightnin Loops . At that point, Six Flags purchased the park. After the 1978 season when Lightning Loops opened, it was determined that Alpen Blitz was no longer needed. It was sold and removed to make room for other flat rides. Big Fury was also sold and replaced with the Wild Rider at the end of the 1977 season. Image SyracuseBlitz helmet.png right The Syracuse Blitz was a Professional Indoor Football League PIFL team that played one exhibition game in 1998 and was going to join the league officially in 1999. The franchise was originally awarded to Buffalo, NY as the Buffalo Blitz on June 16, 1997. The move was part of a rush brought on by the threat of the Buffalo Bills lease expiration, which had led to speculation that the Bills would leave Buffalo speculation that turned out to be unfounded as an extension was reached . The Blitz was owned by Don Angelo, Bryan Perry, and a group of area investors. At that time, they were negotiating with the University at Buffalo & Buffalo State College for playing sites for the upcoming PIFL season. In September of 97, the Arena Football League 1987 2008 Arena Football League announced their next franchise would be in Buffalo also, later on known as the Buffalo Destroyers . This forced the move of the PIFL Blitz to Syracuse, NY . After one scheduled tryout Feb. 21, 1998 , the Syracuse Blitz did not come together in time for the 1998 PIFL season, so the team had changed their plans to enter the league in 1999. The Blitz in fact did play one exhibition game against the Louisiana Bayou Beast at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the Louisiana State University campus in Baton Rouge, LA on July 4, 1998. The Beast won the exhibition game 39 18. The Blitz wore all black uniforms with all black helmets no logos used . The Syracuse Blitz never did take to the field in the 1999 regular season, as the league changed its name to the Indoor Professional Football League that season. Andrew Andy Blitz born June 28, 1971 is an United States American comedian and writer best known for his sketch comedy and writing work on the late night talk show Late Night with Conan O Brien , where he earned 7 Emmy nominations. Blitz was born in New York City , grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey and graduated from Columbia University in 1994. He began his work on Late Night in 1999.
