For the card game Calculation game Refimprove date December 2009 A calculation is a deliberate process for transforming one or more inputs into one or more results, with variable change. The term is used in a variety of senses, from the very definite arithmetic al calculation of using an algorithm to the vague heuristics of calculating a strategy in a competition or calculating the chance of a successful relationship between two people. For example, multiplication multiplying 7 by 8 is a simple algorithmic calculation. Estimating the fair price for financial instruments using the Black Scholes model is a complex algorithmic calculation. Statistical estimation s of the likely election results from opinion polls also involve algorithmic calculations, but provide results made up of ranges of possibilities rather than exact answers. To calculate means to ascertain by computing. The English word derives from the Latin calculus , which originally meant a small stone in the gall bladder from Latin calx . The Wait Calculation was introduced by Andrew Kennedy in his paper, Interstellar Travel The Wait Calculation and the Incentive Trap of Progress , ref Interstellar Travel The Wait Calculation and the Incentive Trap of Progress. JBIS Vol 59 No 7 July 2006. ref published in the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society JBIS . Kennedy refutes the notion that continued growth will inhibit interstellar travel setting out for the stars because travelers expect to be overtaken by later travelers who have faster speeds at their disposal. He points out that, assuming technology develops such that there is exponential growth in the velocity of travel, there is an optimal departure time for arriving earliest. Kennedy shows that from any point in time to a given destination, there is a minimum to the total time to destination even with continuing exponential growth in the velocity of travel, and that voyagers can have the reasonable expectation of arriving without being overtaken by later voyagers by waiting a time t before leaving, where the relation between the time it takes to get to a destination now, T sub now sub , or after waiting, T sub t sub , Citation needed reason This is my sane guess at the meanings of these variables, but I don t have access to Kennedy s paper. date June 2011 and growth in velocity of travel can be formed at its simplest by, math frac T now T t 1 r tfrac t 2 math where r is the mean annual increase in world power production. Socialism sidebar Calculation in kind is a type of accounting based on physical magnitudes and physical quantities rather than a common unit of accounting for economic calculation. Calculation in kind, or valueless calculation , is often described as the form of calculation that would supersede Money monetary calculation in a moneyless socialist economy. As a replacement for monetary calculation, calculation in kind would dispense of an object s exchange value inherent to all commodities in monetary economies, so that only an object s use value would remain as the basis for economic accounting. ref The Alternative to Capitalism . In mathematical logic , a formal calculation is sometimes defined as a calculation which is systematic, but without a rigorous justification . This means that we are manipulating the symbols in an expression using a generic substitution, without proving that the necessary conditions hold. Essentially, we are interested in the form of an expression, and not necessarily its underlying meaning. This reasoning can either serve as positive evidence that some statement is true, when it is difficult or unnecessary to provide a proof, or as an inspiration for the creation of new completely rigorous definitions. However, this interpretation of the term formal is not universally accepted, and some consider it to mean quite the opposite A completely rigorous argument, as in mathematical logic formal mathematical logic . Examples A simple example A somewhat exaggerated example would be to use the equation math sum n 0 infty q n frac 1 1 q math which holds under certain conditions to conclude that math sum n 0 infty 2 n 1. math This is incorrect according to the usual definition of infinite sums of real numbers, since the related sequence does not converge. However, this result can inspire extending the definition of infinite sums, and the creation of new fields, such as the p adic number 2 adic numbers , where the series in question converges and this statement is perfectly valid. Formal power series Formal power series is a concept that adopts some properties of convergent power series used in real analysis , and applies them to objects that are similar to power series in form, but have nothing to do with the notion of convergence. Delay calculation is the term used in integrated circuit design for the calculation of the gate delay of a single logic gate and the wires attached to it. By contrast, static timing analysis computes the delays of entire paths, using delay calculation to determine the delay of each gate and wire. There are many methods used for delay calculation for the gate itself. The choice depends primarily on the speed and accuracy required Circuit simulators such as SPICE may be used. This is the most accurate, but slowest, method. Two dimensional tables are commonly used in applications such as logic synthesis , Placement EDA placement and Routing EDA routing . These tables take an output load and input slope, and generate a circuit delay and output slope. A very simple model called the K factor model is sometimes used. Soft balancing occurs when weaker states decide that the dominance and influence of a stronger state is unacceptable, but that the military advantage of the stronger state is so overwhelming that traditional balancing is infeasible or even impossible. In addition to overwhelming military superiority, scholars also suggest that democratic peace theory suggests a preference toward soft, rather than hard, balancing among democracies. As opposed to traditional balancing, soft balancing is undertaken not to physically shift the balance of power but to undermine, frustrate, and increase the cost of unilateral action for the stronger state. Purpose Hydraulic calculations are required to prove the flow of water or water mixed with chemical additive through piping networks for the purpose of controlling or extinguishing a fire. The hydraulic calculation procedure is defined in the reference model codes as published by National Fire Protection Association NFPA National Fire Protection Association . ref National Fire Protection Association. http www.nfpa.org ref The calculations prove that the water available usually from a city water main, elevated storage tank, or fire pump is strong enough has enough pressure , and plentiful enough has enough gallons volume to fight the worst case fire expected in a given building based on the building use, the building height, and the items expected to be legally stored . Basis of calculation Calculations are based on the worst expected fire, located in the geometrically farthest point from the water source based on the path the extinguishing water is required to travel to get to the fire . Analysis of the worst expected fire is based on the use of the building and areas. The hazard rating of various areas is defined by National Fire Protection Association NFPA Codes. Areas include Light Hazard offices, toilets, and similar areas of light combustibles and light fuel loading Ordinary Hazard car parking, stores, restaurants Extra Hazard flammable chemical use, heavy manufacturing, plastics Storage flammable items stored in solid piles, on shelves, or on racks to a significant height . Unreferenced date February 2008 Offshore balancing is a strategic concept used in Realism in international relations realist analysis in international relations . The term describes a strategy where a great power uses favored regional powers to check the rise of potential hostile powers. It arguably permits a great power to maintain its power without the costs of large military deployments around the world. It can be seen as the informal empire analogue to federalism in formal ones for instance the proposal for the Imperial Federation in the late British Empire It was primarily used during the Cold War between the US and Soviet Union. According to political scientist John Mearsheimer in his University of Chicago American Grand Strategy class, offshore balancing is the strategy used by the United States in the 1930s and also in the 1980 1988 Iran Iraq war. Mearsheimer argues that when the United States gave Lend Lease aid to Britain in the 1930s, the U.S. was engaging in offshore balancing by being the arsenal of democracy, not the fighters for it. This is consistent with offshore balancing because the U.S. initially did not want to commit American lives to the European conflict. The United States supported the losing side Iraq in the Iran Iraq war to prevent the development of a regional hegemon , which could ultimately threaten U.S. influence. Furthermore, offshore balancing can seem like isolationism when a rough balance of power in international relations exists, which was the case in the 1930s. wiktionarypar balancing test A balancing test is any judicial test in which the jurists weigh the importance of multiple factors in a legal case. Proponents of such tests argue that they allow a deeper consideration of complex issues than a bright line rule can allow. But critics say that such tests can be used to justify any conclusion which the judge might arbitrarily decide upon. In the United States US , many legal issues which had previously been considered settled by the imposition of bright line tests through United States Supreme Court Supreme Court precedents have been replaced by balancing tests in recent years. Referring to evidence When referring to evidence presented at a trial, the balancing test allows the court to exclude relevant evidence if its probative value is substantially outweighed by the danger of unfair prejudice, confusion of the issues, misleading the jury, or by considerations of undue delay, waste of time, or needless presentation of cumulative evidence. In other words, if a particular piece of evidence is substantially more prejudicial than it is probative, it may not be allowed in as evidence. ref http www.law.cornell.edu rules fre rules.htm Rule403 Federal Rules of Evidence, Rule 403. ref Examples One balancing test from American administrative procedure law applies to the question of due process of law , a consideration arising from the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution Fifth Amendment and Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution Fourteenth Amendments to the constitution.
