for the Star Trek The Original Series episode The Conscience of the King Image ConscienceOfTheKing.jpg thumb First edition right Conscience of the King 1951 is a historical novel by the English author Alfred Duggan . The novel follows the speculative exploits of Cerdic of Wessex Cerdic Elesing , legendary founder of the Anglo Saxons Anglo Saxon kingdom of Wessex , from his birth in 451 Anno Domini AD ref This date is according to the novel but his actual birthdate is not certain. ref of Germanic peoples Germanic and Romano British descent through his rise to power as first king of the West Saxons in Anglo Saxon England England until his death in 534. It is written in the style of an autobiography or personal memoir, and the character is portrayed as a conquering antihero who is not above acting against those who pose a threat to his independence and power, including members of his own family, and who even leads a marauding Germanic army to conquer his own native city and massacre its inhabitants. The title taken from Shakespeare s Hamlet is thus completely ironic. Cerdic does occasionally remark that he is worried that if either the gods of the Germanic tribes who regard kinslaying and treachery as unforgivable crimes or the Christianity in which he was brought up are true, he will spend eternity in Hell but he concludes dismissively that even if this is the case It was fun while it lasted . During his journeys he is accompanied by his son Cynric of Wessex Cynric who shows great promise as both a warrior and the future heir to his father s throne, and is the only person in the entire book towards whom the writer narrator shows any kind of genuine affection, partly because Cynric is simple mindedly honest and faithful to his father, even failing to grasp Cerdic s occasional ..., there is considerable attention given to King Arthur Arthur who in Duggan s depiction was in fact not a king but rather the leader of a band of Cataphract s heavy cavalry which helped the surviving ...   more details

  1. Manifestation of Conscience

Orphan date February 2009 Manifestation of Conscience is a practice, in religious orders, of making one s superior, such as an abbot or prior , aware of the state of one s conscience. This is so the superior may know them intimately, and thus further their spiritual progress. It is not a form of Confession and therefore the superior need not be a priest. As in Confession, however, the secret must, however, be kept inviolably, and hence a subject may object to any external use whatever of the revelations he has made to the superior. The knowledge of the state of soul acquired by manifestation of conscience enables the superior to determine the expediency of the frequency of communion, what spiritual reading is to be selected, what penances to be practised, what counsel to be given concerning doubts, difficulties, and temptations. By the decree Quemadmodum , of 17 December 1890, Pope Leo XIII forbade both mandatory manifestation of conscience and the practice of superiors inducing their subjects to make such manifestations. 1. Shocks the conscience

Shocks the conscience is a phrase used as a legal standard in the United States and Canada . An action is understood to shock the conscience if it is perceived as manifestly and grossly unjust, typically by a judge. United States Unreferenced section date February 2010 In United States law which describes whether or not the due process requirement of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution has been met. This term originally entered into case law with the decision for Rochin v. California 1953 . This balancing test is often cited as having subsequently been used in a particularly subjective manner. The term is also used in some jurisdictions as a means to determine whether a jury award is out of line with the underlying civil wrong a jury award can be overturned on appeal if, by its amount relative to the underlying civil wrong, it shocks the conscience . Shock the conscience has also been used as a constitutional standard in discussing the issue of whether or not detainees can be tortured according to American law. Canada In Canada the phrase was adopted in the case Canada v. Schmidt 1987 to determine whether extradition would be a breach of fundamental justice under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms . A court may look at the justice system of another country, and disregarding finicky requirements of fundamental justice in Canada, may consider some potential punishments in other countries to be so outrageous that a person should not be put at risk by the extraditing government. The measure was used in United States v. Burns 2001 to find that the possibility of execution would shock the conscience. Critics such as Professor Peter Hogg have suggested that the use of this measure indicates courts have enormous discretion, and he argues this is demonstrated by inconsistencies between what is considered shocking and what is considered cruel and unusual punishment . ref Peter Hogg, Constitutional Law of Canada . 2003 Student Ed., pages 991 992 ...   more details

  1. Conscience Whigs

The Conscience Whigs were a faction of the Whig Party United States Whig Party in the state of Massachusetts noted for their moral opposition to slavery . They were noted as opponents of the more conservative Cotton Whigs who dominated the state party, led by such figures as Edward Everett , Robert C. Winthrop , and Abbott Lawrence , whose close association with the New England textile industry led them to de emphasize the slavery issue. Leaders of the Conscience Whigs included Charles Sumner , Henry Wilson , and Charles Francis Adams, Sr. Charles Francis Adams . The group split from the Whig party in 1848, when the national party nominated the slave owning General Zachary Taylor for President, and played a role in the creation of the new Free Soil Party , which nominated Adams for Vice President in that year. Following the failure of the Free Soil Party in that year, however, many Conscience Whigs returned to the Whig fold, and their leaders played an important role later in the foundation of the Republican Party United States Republican Party . The term Conscience Whig is sometimes used more broadly to refer to Whigs in other states noted for their opposition to slavery. References Whigs A Dictionary of British History. Ed. John Cannon.
