The TV drama invites the audience to participate online and in reality, offering various layers of involvement. no footnotes date October 2011 Jesuit drama was a form of theatre practised in the colleges of the Society of Jesus between the sixteenth and 18th centuries, as a way of instructing students in rhetoric and imparting Roman Catholic doctrine. History In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Jesuit colleges spread across Europe, and almost all of these presented at least one play each year. The first recorded performance was in 1551, at the College Mamertino at Messina , in Sicily , but by the mid 17th centuries, several hundred plays were being performed annually. The Ratio studiorum of 1599 meant that it was compulsory for Jesuit students to perform plays supporting the Counter Reformation . As Jesuit drama expanded, it also evolved, becoming more elaborate. The earliest plays were performed in Latin language Latin , without any female characters or costumes. Later, performances were frequently given in the vernacular , and they became generally more extravagant. As Jesuit drama became more extravagant, so these productions were increasingly criticised. These criticisms focused on the cost of the plays and their exaggerated place in the curriculum of certain Jesuit colleges. These criticisms added to the already growing anti Jesuit sentiment in the 18th century, which resulted in the banning of Jesuit drama in many areas. Performances ceased permanently in 1773, with the suppression of the Society of Jesus. Content Jesuit dramas, as well as instructing students in correct language use and oratory skills, served as a means of instruction in Roman Catholic doctrine and values, for both the students and the audience. It belongs with other essays of the period in which Wagner attempted to explain and reconcile his political and artistic ideas, at a time when he was working on the libretto libretti , and later the music, of his Ring cycle . Background As the longest of all of Wagner s literary works apart from his autobiography Mein Leben 376 pages long in its English language English translation , Opera and Drama is perhaps better described by the word treatise , as suggested by its translator W. Ashton Ellis. It follows from his earlier writings of the period 1849 1850 more particularly Art and Revolution 1849 , which sets out Wagner s ideals for an artwork that would be appropriate for his ideal society The Artwork of the Future 1849 , which sets out ideas for a music drama which would meet such ideals and Das Judenthum in der Musik Jewishness in Music 1850 , which amongst other matters excoriates commercialism in art.
