Elephant is the title of a United Kingdom British public information film about the importance of wearing a seatbelt in the rear of a car . It was first broadcast in 1993 and continued until 1998, when it was replaced by the Julie Public Information Film Julie campaign. The film, shot entirely in black and white save for a streak of red in the closing shot , shows four friends driving along an ordinary street. The driver and the passenger sitting behind him are not wearing their seatbelt s. When the car crashes into another vehicle ahead, computer imagery shows the unrestrained back seat passenger morphing into an elephant to demonstrate that in a collision at 30 miles per hour, a passenger not wearing a seatbelt can be thrown forward at the force of 3 and a half tons, equivalent to an elephant charging directly at the person in front. The weight of the elephant forces the driver through the windscreen , and the front seat passenger gapes in horror as the camera closes in on the driver s body and the wreckage of the car. This was the last public information film about seatbelt s to use the Clunk Click Every Trip slogan, here abbreviated to an onomatopoeic Clunk Click appearing in time with the soundtrack. A total of 124 6 minute cartoons were produced between 1964 and 1980. Plot A zoo elephant breaks free of its tether and follows Pink out of the zoo. Pink orders it back, but the zoo is closed. Sympathetic to the elephant s sadness, Pink takes it home. He battles wits with his apartment manager, who is in bed trying to sleep while Pink attempts to push the elephant into various rooms and beds. Eventually the elephant finds a bed, which then collapses through several floors squashing both Pink and the apartment manager. Plot The short tells the story of a timid elephant named Elmer. In this story, he is invited to Tillie Tiger s birthday party, bringing her a bouquet of flowers. Tillie loves Elmer, but the other animal kids make fun of his nose trunk and cruelly mock him when Tillie isn t around to defend him. Brokenhearted by their teasing, Elmer leaves the party and cries in front of the nearby pond. Elmer is reassured by a nearby giraffe named Joe who admits to him that he used to suffer the same teasing about his neck. Just then, a fire breaks out at Tillie s tree house with Tillie still in it. The rescue efforts by the other children as well as a monkey fire brigade prove futile. With the help of Joe Giraffe and some pelican s who resemble Jimmy Durante , Elmer successfully puts out the fire and rescues Tillie. Later ... getting his own strip which did not last long.
