  1. Arch of Janus

Image RomaArcoGianoCostantino1.JPG thumb 250px The Arch of Janus was not dedicated to the Roman god, and is the only triumphal arch with four front sides. commons Arco di Giano The Arch of Janus is the only quadrifrons triumphal arch preserved in Rome , across a crossroads in the Velabrum Forum Boarium . It was built in the early 4th century of spolia , possibly in honour of Constantine I or Constantius II . Its current name is probably from the Renaissance or later and is not ancient. The name is derived from its four fronted, four arched structure. In the Middle Ages , the Frangipane family transformed the building into a fortress and so it survived intact up until 1830. Then the attic and top were torn down because they were erroneously believed not to belong to the original structure. Fragments of the dedicatory inscription are still preserved inside the nearby church of San Giorgio al Velabro . 1. Gates of Janus

merge Temple of Janus Roman Forum date March 2011 In History of Rome Roman history and legend, the Gates of Janus were opened when Ancient Rome Rome went to war and shut when the whole Roman world was at peace. According to Livy 1.19 the second Roman Kingdom king of Rome , Numa Pompilius , decided to distract the early, warlike Romans from their violent ways by instilling in them awe and reverence. His projects included establishing religion, certain priesthoods, and the building of temples as a distraction with the beneficial side effect of imbuing superstition. Karl Marx was later inspired by this passage to coin the phrase religion is the opiate of the masses. The Temple of Janus Roman Forum Temple of Janus was Numa s most famous temple project. It was located in the Roman Forum near the Argelitum. During Numa s reign, the Gates of the Temple of Janus were closed and Rome remained at peace. The next king, Tullus Hostilius , opened the Gates of Janus when he went to war with Alba Longa . The Gates of Janus remained open for the next 400 years until after the First Punic War when Titus Manlius Torquatus T. Manlius Torquatus closed the Gates of Janus in 235 BC .
