  1. The Honourable The Irish Society

The Honourable The Irish Society is the organisation created by royal charter consisting of members nominated by livery companies of the City of London , set up to colonise County Londonderry during the plantation of Ulster . Notably it was involved in the construction of the city of Derry Londonderry , where it continues to own the Derry walls City walls City Walls . It was also particularly active in the town of Coleraine . History Following the end of the primary conflict between the English monarchy and the Chieftains of Ireland with the flight of the Earls in 1607, James I of England set out to defend against a future attack from within or without. In his survey, he found that the town of Derry could become either a great asset as a control over the River Foyle and Lough Swilly , or it could become an inviting back door if the people of the area were against him. He pressurised the guilds of the City of London to fund the resettlement of the area, including the building of a new walled city, and the result was the creation of the society. The Society financed the building of the Guildhall, Derry . Work started in 1887 and it was opened in July 1890, having cost 19,000. ref name DC cite web title Guildhall work Derry City Council url http www2.derrycity.gov.uk guildhall.htm accessdate 22 November 2010 ref References reflist External links http irishsociety.infm.ulst.ac.uk The Irish Society DEFAULTSORT Irish Society Category Derry Category County Londonderry NorthernIreland stub UK hist stub Ireland hist stub ...   more details

Plot summary The lives of several friends are thrown into disarray by the machinations of Julius King. Julius makes a bet with his ex girlfriend Morgan that he can break up the homosexual couple Axel and Simon meanwhile, Morgan and her brother in law Rupert are conned into embarking on an affair, and Morgan s nephew Peter is falling in love with her. Julius King, returning from a university job in America, seeks out his old school friends, Rupert Foster and Axel Nillson. His former lover, Morgan Browne, Foster s sister in law, has arrived in England at the same time. Foster s attempts to keep them apart are thwarted by Morgan Browne, still in love with King and determined to confront him. At the same time, she is avoiding her husband, Tallis Browne, who still loves her. The plot is complicated further when, almost immediately and by accident, Julius King meets Tallis Browne. King is intrigued by his old lover s husband, a rather nondescript fellow with not much personal presence but considerable moral integrity. King himself is a man of formidable intellect, and he does not suffer anyone gladly. He is irritated by what he sees as self satisfied ..., and the damage done to the Fosters is gratuitously cruel.
