History The Institute was established in 1990 through a generous benefaction from the late Dr D. M. McDonald , a well known and successful industrialist. The benefaction enabled the University to construct purpose built premises for the Institute which include research rooms and laboratories, together with storage space, a seminar room and a modest library. Mission and purpose The Institute provides support for Cambridge based researchers in the various branches of archaeology , with a particular interest in the archaeology of early human cognition . The Institute emphasises the value of archaeological science, and contains laboratories for geoarchaeology , archaeozoology , archaeobotany , and artefact analysis. The extensive faunal remains collection of the Department of Archaeology is now based within the McDonald Institute and a corresponding reference collection of plant remains is being assembled. There are also research rooms for post excavation work on major field projects. The Institute is primarily a centre for post doctoral research though it does provide facilities for a number of PhD students whose research fits within existing McDonald Institute themes. The Stowers Institute for Medical Research is a biomedical research organization that conducts basic research on genes and proteins that control fundamental processes in living cells to analyze diseases and find keys to their causes, treatment, and prevention. The main facility is located in Kansas City, Missouri . Description The Institute was incorporated with an initial donation of 500 in 1994 by James E. Stowers and his wife Virginia Stowers, cancer survivors and founders of American Century Investments . Over the next decade, the couple endowed the institute with gifts totaling almost 2 billion. The Institute opened its doors in November 2000 on the former site of Menorah Medical Center Menorah Hospital . In 2008, there were 25 independent research programs plus core facilities in bioinformatics, proteomics, microarray, molecular biology, flow cytometry, and imaging. In total, the organization employs more than 550 scientist, research associates, technicians and support staff, including more than 140 postdoctoral research associates and graduate students. The Stowers plan for the Institute includes expansion every decade. The Institute is recognized by the IRS as a medical research organization. It is a Missouri not for profit corporation, and is a 501 c 3 charitable organization.
