In silos, material is fed through the top and removed from the bottom. Typical silo applications include animal feed, industrial powders, cement, and pharmaceuticals. Free movement of stored materials, on a first in, first out basis, is essential in maximizing silo efficiency. The goal of silo efficiency is to ensure that oldest material is used first and does not contaminate newer, fresher material. Two main problems, Acoustic cleaning Rat holing rat holing and Acoustic cleaning Bridging bridging , complicate silo efficiency. When rat holing occurs, powders adhere to the sides of silos. Bridging occurs when material blocks at the silo base. Manual cleaning, by lowering a worker on a rope to free material, is the simplest way to clean silos. However, manual cleaning is dangerous due to the release of material and the possible presence of gases. In cases of bridging, an additional danger exists as the exit hole needs to be rodded from underneath, exposing the worker to falling powder. Alternative cleaning methods include Air blaster s are a well established cleaning method. Air cannons are expensive, however, as limited coverage requires purchase of multiple units. It provides a short cut for vessels navigating the Havel River Havel , avoiding the winding and constricted navigation through the city of Brandenburg an der Havel . The convert 5.26 km long canal follows the route of the Silograben of 1782, and was constructed between 1907 and 1910. At its upstream end, the Vorstadtschleuse Brandenburg lock descends convert 1 m into the lower level of the Havel, known as the Brandenburger Niederhavel , where a junction is also made with the Beetzsee . Unreferenced date December 2009 Quintus Poppaedius Silo sometimes seen as Pompaedius d. 88 BC was the leader of the Italian tribe of the Marsi and one of the leaders of the Italians during the Social War 91 88 BC Social War against Rome . He was a friend of Marcus Livius Drusus tribune Marcus Livius Drusus the Younger . A story told by Plutarch tells of Silo, who made a visit to his friend Marcus Livius and met the children of the house. In a playful mood he asked the children s support for his cause. All of them nodded and smiled except Cato the Younger , who stared at the guest with most suspicious looks. Silo demanded an answer from him and seeing no response took Cato and hung him by the feet out of the window. Even then, Cato would not say anything. After Drusus s murder, the Social War started and Silo became the military leader of the Marsii. At the start of the War, twelve Italian tribes formed Italia and Silo was elected one of two Italian consuls. Silo was given command of the Marsic group Marsi, Paeligni , Vestini , Marrucini , Picentes , Frentani , whereas his consular colleague Gaius Papius Mutilus was given command of the Samnite group. Silo had succeses in the early stages of the war, amongst which the defeat and death of Quintus Servilius Caepio the Younger , but after the fortunes of war turned, he was killed in battle in 88 BC by Drusus s brother Mamercus Aemilius Lepidus Livianus . Henry Tate established his Liverpool refinery in 1872, and Tate & Lyle built their huge concrete sugar silo in the 1950s, close to the Liverpool docks. A huge conveyor tower was constructed next to it, and this was used to bring sugar up from ships in Huskisson Dock. The sugar was then transported via several other conveyors into the top of the silo. Once in the silo, an overhead railway system was used to distribute the sugar along the length of the silo. The hopper ran along on a track, depositing the sugar through big grills positioned between the rails. The disease results from inhalation of nitrogen dioxide NO sub 2 sub gas from fresh silage. The presentation is variable depending on level of exposure.
