  1. The medium is the message

The medium is the message is a phrase coined by Marshall McLuhan meaning that the form of a media communication medium embeds itself in the message , creating a symbiotic relationship by which the medium influences how the message is perceived. Publications The phrase was introduced in his most widely known book, Understanding Media The Extensions of Man , published in 1964. ref Originally published in 1964 by Mentor, New York reissued 1994, MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts with an introduction by Lewis Lapham ref McLuhan proposes that a medium itself, not the content it carries, should be the focus of study. He said that a medium affects the society in which it plays a role not only by the content delivered over the medium, but also by the characteristics of the medium itself. McLuhan frequently punned on the word message changing it to mass age , mess age , and massage a later book, The Medium is the Massage was originally to be titled The Medium is the Message , but McLuhan preferred the new title which is said to have been a The Medium is the Massage Origin of the title printing error . 1. Medium shot

unreferenced date December 2007 In film , a medium shot is a camera shot from a medium distance. The dividing line between long shot and medium shot is fuzzy, as is the line between medium shot and close up . In some standard texts and professional references, a full length view of a human subject is called a medium shot in this terminology, a shot of the person from the knees up or the waist up is a close up shot. In other texts, these partial views are called medium shots. For example, in Europe a medium shot is framed from the waist up . It is mainly used for a scene when you can see what kind of expressions they are using. There is no evident reason for this variation. It is not a distinction caused by, for example, a difference between TV and film language or 1930s and 1980s language. Medium shots are relatively good in showing facial expressions but work well to show body language. 1. Linear medium

Unreferenced date December 2009 A linear medium is any medium which is intended to be written to or accessed in a linear fashion, literally meaning in a line . This means that the information is written to or read from the medium in a given order, so for example a book containing a novel is intended to be read from front to back, beginning to end, and is therefore a linear medium. It may be written in the same way, but would not necessarily need to be, to be considered a linear medium. A book containing an encyclopedia however is a non linear medium, as it is not necessary for the articles to be accessed or written in any particular order. Even though both non linear and linear mediums have perimeters to which they are restricted, linear mediums have a set path of how to get from point A to point B, whereas non linear mediums do not. Examples in technology are a pre recorded videocassette which is usually accessed one item after another, compared with a pre recorded DVD which can be accessed in any order. 1. Shared medium

In telecommunication , a shared medium is a transmission medium medium or channel communications channel of information transfer that serves more than one user at the same time. Most channels only function correctly when one user is transmitting, so a channel access method is always in effect. In circuit switching , each user typically gets a fixed share of the channel capacity. A multiplexing scheme divides up the channel capacity capacity of the medium. Common multiplexing schemes include time division multiplexing and frequency division multiplexing . Channel access methods for circuit switching include time division multiple access , frequency division multiple access , etc. In packet switching , the sharing is more dynamic  &mdash each user takes up little or none of the capacity when idle, and can utilize the entire capacity if transmitting while all other users are idle. Channel access methods for packet switching include carrier sense multiple access , token passing , etc. Category Multiplexing Telecomm term stub ...   more details

  1. Medium theory

Cleanup date November 2007 seealso Media studies Medium theory is the name assigned to a variety of approaches used to examine how the means of expression of human communication impact the meaning s of human communication s . Joshua Meyrowitz originated the term in his 1985 book, No Sense of Place . Other scholars with work relevant to medium theory include Marshall McLuhan 1963, 1966, 1988 and Neil Postman 1985 . Currently, medium theory occupies a marginal position within U.S. communication and media studies Croteau & Hoynes, 2003 305 . The majority of U.S. communication and media studies place their emphasis on the content of communication e.g., sex and violence not the medium of communications. In Canada and elsewhere, the theory continues to inform studies that assess large scale social changes that follow the adoption of a new medium. German Media Theory operates along similar lines and draws some influence from McLuhan, though it occupies a more central location in German academia. Joshua Meyrowitz 1985 uses the term medium theory to refer to the body of literature that focuses on the technological aspects of media beyond their content. It aims to look beyond the content to the medium which reveals the key to its social impact Croteau & Hoynes, 2003 305 . McLuhan s Message Marshall McLuhan is the most widely read literary theorist and is best known for his claim the medium is the message . McLuhan believed that we should observe not only the media itself but the ways in which each new medium disrupts tradition and reshapes social life Croteau & Hoynes 2003,307 . The primary value of Loeffler Medium is in the growth and morphological characterization of members of the genus, Corynebacterium. This formulation enhances the formation of metachromatic granules within the cells of the organisms. 2. Due to its serum content, Loeffler Medium can be used for the determination of proteolytic activities of microorganisms. 3. The gray white surface of the medium provides an excellent background for the detection and observation of colonial pigmentation. 4. If all extraneous moisture is removed aseptically from the slants and the upper part of the slant is heated until the slant ruptures, this medium can be used for the detection of ascospores. An excitable medium is a nonlinear dynamical system which has the capacity to propagate a wave of some description, and which cannot support the passing of another wave until a certain amount of time has passed known as the refractory time . In Chemistry, oscillating reaction s are excitable media, for example the Belousov Zhabotinsky reaction and the Briggs Rauscher reaction . 1. Medium Productions

Notability Companies date January 2011 Unreferenced date January 2011 Medium Productions was a record label created in 1993 primarily to publish the music of Steve Jansen , Richard Barbieri , and Mick Karn , ex members of the band Japan band Japan and Rain Tree Crow. Medium was a means to release their own music with other collaborating artists, without big record label compromise. Fifteen CDs of innovative and largely instrumental music were produced over a ten year period. Medium Productions folded in 2004 as the founders decided it was time for a change of direction and became more involved in other projects such as Porcupine Tree , Nine Horses . The entire MP catalog has been re released on the Voiceprint Music label beginning in 2001. 1. Optical medium

An optical medium is material through which electromagnetic wave s propagate. It is a form of transmission medium . The permittivity and Permeability electromagnetism permeability of the medium define how electromagnetic waves propagate in it. The medium has an intrinsic impedance , given by math eta E x over H y math where math E x math and math H y math are the electric field and magnetic field , respectively. In a region with no electrical conductivity , the expression simplifies to math eta sqrt mu over varepsilon . math For example, in free space the intrinsic impedance is called the characteristic impedance of vacuum , denoted Z sub 0 sub , and math Z 0 sqrt mu 0 over varepsilon 0 . math Waves propagate through a medium with velocity math c w nu lambda math , where math nu math is the frequency and math lambda math is the wavelength of the electromagnetic waves. This equation also may be put in the form math c w omega over k , math where math omega math is the angular frequency of the wave and math k math is the wavenumber of the wave. In electrical engineering , the symbol math beta math , called the phase constant , is often used instead of math k math . The propagation velocity of electromagnetic waves in free space , an idealized standard reference state like absolute zero for temperature , is conventionally denoted by c sub 0 sub ref With ISO 31 5 , NIST and the BIPM have adopted the notation c sub 0 sub . ref math c 0 1 over sqrt varepsilon 0 mu 0 , math where math varepsilon 0 math is the electric constant and math mu 0 math is the magnetic constant .
