Children s Notebook, Op. 69 is a set of seven piano solo pieces composed by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1944 1945. The selections were chosen from the pieces written by the composer to his daughter Galina Shostakovich for her study on piano. Only six of them were published under the title originally. The seventh piece, Birthday , written for the daughter s ninth birthday in 1945, was later appended to the collection. Interestingly, the sixth piece of this set, entitled Clockwork Doll , echoes the motif used in Shostakovich s very first composition, the scherzo for orchestra in F sharp minor, Op. 1.
