He was born Herman Hinrichs in Jersey City, New Jersey , to German American immigrant parents. Oakland began his musical career after leaving the United States Army in 1905, joining Lew Dockstader s minstrel show minstrels in Rochester, New York . He began recording for Edison Records in 1908, soon after Richard Jose s retirement. In addition to appearing as a solo performer, Oakland recorded duet s with Billy Murray singer Billy Murray , sometimes singing the female part in love songs. He often sang woeful, sentimental songs that contrasted with Murray s usually upbeat reportoire. The Detroit Tribune a newspaper in Detroit, Michigan was started as the Daily Tribune in 1849 and used the name until 1862. In 1862 the Tribune joined with the Detroit Daily Advertiser which then subsequently absorbed other papers, becoming the Advertiser and Tribune . It acquired new management, including James E. Scripps future founder of the Detroit News . In 1877 the Advertiser and Tribune merged with the 11 year old Detroit Daily Post and became the Post and Tribune .
