The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God is a liturgical feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Blessed Virgin Mary celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church on 1 January, the octave liturgical Octave Day of Christmas . In some countries this day is considered a Day of Obligation . The feast was celebrated in the East before it was in the West, but by the 5th century it was celebrated in France and Spain on the Sunday before Christmas . In Rome , even before the 7th century, 1 January was used as a celebration of the Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary . In the 13th and 14th centuries, the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ had come to replace the Marian feast on 1 January. The celebration of the Feast of the Circumcision on 1 January was expanded to the entire Roman Catholic Church in 1570 when Pope Pius V promulgated the Roman Missal . In 1914, the feast of the Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was established in Portugal , occurring on 11 October. citation style date May 2011 The Poor Servants of the Mother of God are a religious congregation founded in 1808 by Mother Mary Magdalen Frances Margaret Taylor in conjunction with Lady Georgiana Fullerton . Mother M. Magdalen was the daughter of a Church of England clergyman. As one of Florence Nightingale s band of nurses in the Crimea she became acquainted with the Catholic Faith as manifested by many of the soldiers, and on her return to England entered the Church. Her subsequent intimacy with Lady Georgiana Fullerton led to the foundation of a congregation for work among the poor of London, then inadequately served by a single convent. At first an affiliation with the Little Sisters of Mary was considered, but this was found to be impracticable, and the new order was placed under the direction of its own superior general Mother M. Magdalen . From the first it was approved and encouraged by Cardinal Henry Edward Manning , its spiritual training being committed to the Fathers of the Society of Jesus , near whose church in Farm St., London, its existence began. Its Constitutions are based on the Rule of St. Augustine , and the congregation was approved by Leo XIII in 1885 . The members devote themselves to visiting the poor, teaching in parochial schools, nursing, and conducting institutions of refuge and rescue for women. To the mother house in Rome are attached two schools and the public church of St. George and the English Martyrs. In this church on Good Friday, 1887 , the Three Hours was preached for the first time in English by Father Lucas, S.J. Other houses are in England , Scotland , Ireland , United States , Venezuela , Kenya . A black habit is worn, with a blue scapular and a black veil . It is situated in the central part of the town separated from the central square by the Town Hall and the Chitalishte Videlina. In the same yards was located the Church of St Theodore which was Panagyurishte s oldest church. St Theodore was constructed in the mid 16th century and used to be a small one nave edifice which is now connected with the larger new church. During the uncertain first decade of the 19th century it was destroyed by Ottoman bandits called kardzhalii and restored between 1808 and 1809 by orders of the Bishop of Plovdiv Dionisius. The construction of the Church of the Holy Mother of God started in 1818 near the southern wall of the old building and was finished in 1823. It was one nave basilica with a colonnade and was much larger than the old church. It was inaugurated by Dionisius as well. The edifice was constructed by craftsmen from Bratsigovo while the interior was decorated by painters from the famous Samokov school. The interior was badly damaged when the Ottomans burned Panagyurishte during the April Uprising in 1876. It was restored between 1878 and 1880 after the Liberation of Bulgaria . The Clerks Regular of the Mother of God of Lucca are a Roman Catholic congregation of priests. They were founded by Saint John Leonardi Giovanni Leonardi , son of middle class parents, who was born in 1541 at Diecimo , Republic of Lucca . He was ordained on December 22, 1572. His congregation may be said to have begun in 1574. Two or three young laymen, attracted by his sanctity and the sweetness of his character, had gathered round him to submit themselves to his spiritual guidance and help him in the work for the reform of manners and the saving of souls which he had begun even as a layman. Giovanni rented the beautiful little church of Santa Maria della Rosa and in a quarter close by, something like community life was started. It was here, when it became evident that Giovanni s lay helpers were preparing for the priesthood and that something like a religious order was in process of formation, that a storm of persecution broke out against the devoted founder. The Fathers of the republic seem to have had a real fear that a native religious order, if spread over Italy, would cause the affairs of the little state to become too well known to its neighbours.
