Complex objects or aggregation of multiple simple objects create self shadows that must be compensated by using several projectors. The objects are typically replaced by neutral color ones, the projection giving all its visual properties, thus the name shader lamps. The technique can be used to create a sense of invisibility , by rendering transparency. The object is illuminated not by a replacement of its own visual properties, but by the corresponding visual surface placed behind the object as seen from an arbitrary viewing point. File LampsofFire.jpg thumb right Lamps of Fire the Spirit of Religions is an anthology of religious writings compiled, and often translated, by Juan Mascar . Synopsis After a preface by Mascar , the book is divided into four sections each filled with numbered selections. The first section, The Spirit of Religions, contains selections from the scriptures of each of the major world religions Hinduism, Zoroastrian, Buddhism, Jainism, Taoism, Confucianism, Shintoism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Sikhism. The other three chapters are based around the themes of Light, Love and Life. In all there are 300 selections, each given a title. After the scriptures in the first chapter, the selections in the subsequent chapters broaden to include writings by mystics and poets. The Bible and the Tao De Ching are the two scriptures most fully represented, while the saint most frequently quoted is St John of the Cross . Composition and publication Mascar explains his selections in a preface where he maintains that all the passages are lamps of fire that all merge into the what John of the Cross called the lamp of the being of God a passage from the Spanish saint s poem The Living Flame of Love and the 108th selection in the book . It was published in the 1921 collection The Triumph of the Egg . Plot summary The story takes place in the fictional town of Huntersburg, Illinois , in June 1908. After learning from her father, Doctor Lester Cochran, on the evening before that he is suffering from a heart disease and might die at any moment, 18 year old Mary Cochran takes a walk around the small town, thinking about her future. Her father had told her that he would be leaving her only very little money after he dies, suggesting her to make plans for the future . He says this in a cold and toneless way, as he has never shown any real affection or warmth. Being fascinated by the atmosphere, she walks through the new factory district where the workers of the new furniture industry live, finally reaching a decayed orchard of an abandoned farm, a place she frequently visits to hide out and be alone. She thinks about her dreams to move to Chicago one day, as she feels uncomfortable with the small town gossip around her mother leaving town with another man when she was a baby. She is disturbed in her reflections when Duke Yetter, a young man, appears after following her which makes her angry. Running away to evade him, she reaches the other end of town, where she is surprised and delighted when a man praises her father who had healed one of his sons and helped the whole family, making her feel a great new love for her father. Meanwhile, her father sits at home and remembers his wife who had come to town ...
