  1. Speech banana

The speech banana is called such due to its shape. When the sounds of speech or phonemes of all the world s languages are charted in a diagram with one axis containing decibel levels dB and the other axis containing the frequency Hertz or Hz , the shape is that of a banana. Generally, the graph known as an audiogram is charted with frequency levels Hz on the X axis and the decibel levels dB on the Y axis. However, normal human hearing can occur with sounds outside of the Speech Banana. These sounds include ambient natural sounds such as a rustling of leaves in the wind or birds chirping. Man made sounds outside of the Speech Banana can include music and mechanical noises i.e., automobiles, lawn mowers . Audiologist s are primarily concerned with hearing loss that occurs within the Speech Banana because it can slow the development of a child s language and speech abilities which, in turn, can profoundly interfere with learning. Hearing loss within the Speech Banana can also hinder communication capabilities in adults. Hearing loss in elderly people is known as Presbyacusis . The first is used when the opponents substantive is factually incorrect, the second for when it does not prove or disprove the motion and the third for when it has already been addressed before. Format Duration In high school, rebuttals are 5 minutes long with the exception of Colorado where it is 4 minutes in college, they are 6 minutes long. Other formats put them at the same length as other speeches, with the third speaker delivering a speech consisting entirely of rebuttals. In NJFL tournament it s 4 minutes long. Restrictions Many believe that new arguments cannot be introduced in rebuttal speeches, and many judges will disregard such arguments, especially if they are flagged by the opposing team. This is because substantives introduced in rebuttal speeches have no speaker to rebut them, and thus will prevail unfairly. Style There are many different styles for rebuttal speeches used by debaters. Aggression and humour may be used in varying amounts for example, one speaker might deliver a polite, straight speech logically rebutting the opponent s substantives, while another may load his or her speech with sarcasm and practically shout at times. Such variations are usually not penalised, because they are recognised as individual styles and not as errors.
