about the publication refimprove date July 2009 The Examiner was a weekly paper founded by James Henry Leigh Hunt Leigh and John Hunt publisher John Hunt in 1808. For the first fifty years it was a leading intellectual journal expounding radical principles, but from 1865 it repeatedly changed hands and political allegiance, resulting in a rapid decline in readership and loss of purpose. Early history While the Examiner was in the hands of John and Leigh Hunt, the sub title was A Sunday paper, on politics, domestic economy, and theatricals , and the newspaper devoted itself to providing independent reports on each of these areas. It consistently published leading writers of the day, including Lord Byron , Percy Bysshe Shelley , John Keats and William Hazlitt . The Hunt brothers failed in their initial aspiration to refuse advertisements in order to increase impartiality. In the first edition, the editor claimed The Examiner would pursue truth for its sole object and the paper s radical reformist principles resulted in a series of high profile prosecutions of the editors. A tradition of publishing accurate news and witty criticisms of domestic and foreign politics was continued by Albany Fonblanque who took over the paper in 1828. Until Fonblanque sold The Examiner in the mid 1860s, the newspaper took the form of a sixteen page journal priced at 6d, designed to be kept and repeatedly referred to. It was founded in 1974 by Gerald Yuasa and Lawrence Imamura to serve what the founders thought were the business interests of the Asian American community in Seattle s International District. In 1975, the Examiner was purchased by the Alaskeros Alaska Cannery Workers Association for 1 and became an activist, community based newspaper. Although the paper became independent three years later, it continued the tradition of community activism that was firmly established under the Alaska Cannery Workers Association. As such, editors were also community activists and organizers rather than traditional journalists. As of 2004 its circulation was 10,000. Today, the International Examiner is the oldest Asian American newspaper in the Northwest and the oldest continuously publishing pan Asian newspaper in the country. History Established in 1935, the Westmount Examiner initially consisted of only a few pages of local news and advertising. In 1952, its new owner, John Sancton, moved the paper to Westmount. In the late 1980s, the Sancton family sold the newspaper to Publications Dumont. Orphan date February 2009 As a newspaper, the Romsey Examiner served the small rural village of Romsey which is set in the Mount Macedon, Victoria . The town is 65 kilometres north west of Melbourne , Australia , and about 15 km south of Lancefield, Victoria Lancefield . Surrounded on three sides by the Great Dividing Range , the town of Five Mile Creek was officially recognised in 1858, but only six weeks later it was renamed Romsey. Reasons for the change are unclear. By the mid 19th century, The traffic between Melbourne and the Bendigo goldfields spurred a development boom for Romsey as a town. Along with the Romsey Examiner the district was also served by Lancefield Examiner and Romsey Advocate . Archives The microfilm archive of the newspaper held at the State Library of Victoria spans 4 Jan 1883 to 24 December 1920.
